BY IRIS B. HOLTON Sentinel City Editor
Earlier this year, legislation was passed in the Florida House and Senate to remove the statue of Confederate Army General Edmond Kirby and replace it. The statue is located in the Na- tional Statuary Hall Collections, in Washington, D. C.
The bill was co-sponsored by State Representatives Ed Narain and Jose Diaz in the House. Senator John Legg sponsored the bill in the Senate.
Rep. Narain said, “I’m very excited about this because
it gives Floridians a chance to choose its replacement.”
Each state has two statues on display in the Capitol. The other Florida statue is of Dr. John Gorrie, of Apalachicola. He is credited with inventing air conditioning.
On Wednesday, members of a special committee of the Great Floridians Program met to select three finalists to replace the statue of General Kirby.
The four-member commit- tee unanimously selected Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune, founder of Bethune-Cookman University. George Washing-
