Building The Tempo At Encore
BY LEON B. CREWS Sentinel Staff Writer
On Friday, the Tampa Housing Au- thority (THA) terminated its contract with the Siltek Group, a construction firm that was managing the construc- tion of The Tempo at Encore, a 203-unit seven story building west of Nebraska Avenue.
T.H.A. Chief Operating Officer, Leroy Moore, said the building is 70 to 80% complete, and the decision to terminate the contract with Siltek was based on performance issues.
“We didn’t get a firm completion date from them, and the decision to termi- nate the contract was made after the third default notice.
“We’re hopeful of getting another contractor within 60 days and bringing the building into completion by next year.”
Moore said Siltek was due to com- plete the building in September, but changed that date to January.
“We lost faith in them meeting their deadline, and this will set us back 45-to- 60 days in completing The Tempo.
“Of the $26.5 million awarded in the contract, $8 million is still in the con- tract budget. The bonding company has to bring the project to completion now, and any extra costs will be paid through a claim against the bond. Siltek was paid based on the work they’ve com- pleted. “

“The Siltek Group built The Reed, and during that project we were able to work past a lot of problems. This time, there were issues of sub-contractors not being paid, and there had been $1 mil- lion in change orders to date on the
