FAMU Upset By Tuskegee In 5th Quarter Classic
FAMU is 0-3 after losing to Tuskegee.
Grambling And Jackson State Play Final SWAC Game Due To Forfeiture
Grambling's third straight road trip to Jackson State fi- nally comes to an end with Sat- urday's tilt at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium.
As punishment for a 2013 for- feit on Jackson State's home- coming, Grambling was forced to pay a $50,000 and play at Jackson State in 2014, 2015 and 2016.
The assumption was the an- nual rivalry would return to Grambling in 2017, but that may not be the case. And the future in football between the two schools is very much un- certain.
The 2017 schedule, which likely won't be finalized and re- leased until the winter, comes at a time when the Southwest- ern Athletic Conference is trim- ming its league slate from nine games to seven. Instead of play- ing all nine opponents, Gram- bling, and the rest of the SWAC, will only play seven, meaning two schools will be left off the schedule.
The Grambling Tigers opened the Southwestern Ath- letic Conference (SWAC) play on the road Saturday against Jackson State University. Head Coach Broderick Fobbs and the Tigers soundly defeated Jackson State, 35-14.
With the win, Grambling moves to 1-1, overall, and 1-0 in SWAC play. The Tigers of Jack- son drop to 0-3 and 0-1 in con- ference action.
Hampton Wins The AT&T Nation’s Classic Over Howard
Hampton players celebrate after winning the Nation’s Classic.
After a 20-year hiatus, the 5th Quarter Classic in Mobile, Alabama proved to be worth the wait as the 13th-ranked Tuskegee University Golden Tigers scored with just over two minutes to play, coming from behind for a 20-17 victory over FCS-member Florida A&M University on a rainy Saturday night at Ladd-Peebles Stadium.
Tuskegee (3-0) trailed for much of the second half, by as many as four with just 4:11 left to play in the game and Florida A&M (0-3) in possession of the ball. The Golden Tigers relied on a defense that forced a three-and-out for Florida
A&M, forcing the Rattlers to punt.
The punt, off the foot of Colby Blanton, found its way to Ladarell Pettway at his own 40-yard line. The redshirt freshman weaved his way through defenders to the Florida A&M 33-yard line, and looked as though he was able to keep his knee off the ground and racing into the end zone. However, the officials say his knee touched and gave Tuskegee the ball at that spot and they didn’t waste any time. The touchdown and extra point gave Tuskegee a three-point lead at 20-17.
WASHINGTON, DC – The most prolific quarter in AT&T Nation’s Football Classic® his- tory made sure the champi- onship trophy will return to southeastern Virginia.
After a sluggish first half, the Hampton Pirates emerged from the locker room in dominant fashion helped by special teams play. Bruce Perry returned a
partially blocked punt 27 yards for one touchdown and Ronald Bell’s 41-yard punt return set up another score as the Pirates repeated as AT&T Nation’s Football Classic cham- pions with a 34-7 victory over the rival Howard Bison on a beautiful Saturday afternoon before 13,068 at RFK Stadium.
Alabama A&M Was No Match For Southern
Bethune 0-2 After BeingDefeated By Tennessee State
BCU loses second game on Saturday in Daytona.
Alabama State University’s senior quarterback Quinter- ris Toppings completed a ca- reer-high 24 passes for another career-high 248 yards, but it was not nearly enough in ASU’s 64-6 loss at Southern in Baton Rouge, LA.
The Hornets committed six turnovers and Southern was able to convert five of those into points.
The Hornets were able to move the ball on offense ac- counting for a season-high 416 yards on 81 plays. ASU threw for 273 yards and rushed for 143.
Southern was able to gain 541
yards from scrimmage, run- ning for 192 yards and passing for 349. All-SWAC runner Lenard Tillery had 124 yards while quarterback Austin Howard completed 14 of his 27 passes for 304 yards.
Southern’s Willie Quinn had another big night receiving with 178 yards on four catches, scoring three times on pass re- ceptions.
ASUwillfinallybebackhome next week after starting the season with three consecutive road games. The Hornets will host Texas Southern at ASU Stadium with the kickoff sched- uled for 6 p.m.
After Big Win Last Week, North Carolina AT&T Loses To Tulsa
For the second consecutive week the Tennessee State Tigers fought off miscues to secure a 31-24 victory at Bethune-Cookman in Day- tona Beach on Saturday after- noon. The Tigers were called for 15 penalties for close to 150 yards and committed three turnovers.
Tennessee State improved to 3-0 on the season as corner- back Terrell Bonds pulled down a tipped ball by Gabe Scott with just over two min- utes remaining in the game.
The interception was the second of the game for
Bonds, helping the Wildcats fall to 0-2.
The Tigers ground attack was the story of the game as they rushed 44 times for 200 yards. Freshman Earl Harri- son led the way with 110 yards on 13 carries. The Memphis native highlighted his day with a 46 yard run for a second quarter touchdown.
Tennesse State has a bye week. Bethune-Cookman will look to avoid a 0-3 start when the Wildcats step into Mid- Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play next weekend at Savannah State.
Two blocked punts and two interceptions, one for touch- down, in the first 20 minutes is not what the North Carolina A&T team needed in an effort to pull off their second straight upset win over a Division I- FBS.
It is what Tulsa used in part,
however, to come away with a 58-21 win over the Aggies Sat- urday afternoon at H.A. Chap- man Stadium. The Golden Hurricane also used an explo- sive offense led by quarterback Dane Evans to build a half- time lead too insurmountable for the Aggies to overcome.
