Publix Signs Lease For Downtown Location

The Publix Store has agreed to build a new store in downtown Tampa. The store will be located at the inter- section of E. Twiggs Street and N. Meridian Avenue.
The company officially signed the lease last week and it is expected that the groundbreaking is tentatively planned for October 7th.
Brian West, spokesman for the chain said the store will be “part of a large major project including a high rise and completion date is late 2018 or 2019. It will be lo- cated in the Channel Dis- trict.”
Upon its completion, the store will employ more than 100 people and will be ap- proximately 37,000 square feet.

in putting a store in the area for quite a while and we had been talking with a devel- oper. Recently, everything fell into place,” West said.
The grocery chain is also planning to build a store in St. Petersburg on Central Av- enue. It will be part of the 700 Central Residential Proj- ect.
Tampa Housing Honored As ‘Outstanding Housing Authority Of The Year’
Recently, the Tampa Housing Authority was chosen as the recipient of the “Outstand- ing Housing Authority of the Year.” The organ- ization was chosen by a committee consisting of Executive Directors and CEOs of several Florida Housing Authorities.
The state-wide award was presented by FAHRO (Florida Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials) during the organiza- tion’s summer conference held at Walt Dis- ney’s “Grand Floridian Resort.” This marks the second time the Tampa Housing Authority has received this designation. It was first recog- nized and presented the award in 2013.
The agency garnered other awards that in- cluded Best Practice awards for its On-Line Section 8 HQS Inspection training initiative, the Prodigy Program, Best Newsletter Photog- raphy in the large agency category and for its YouthBuild Initiative which has redirected the lives of its participants.
Representatives from the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development were on hand to witness this remarkable presentation and included Uche Oluku, of the Miami Re- gional HUD Office, Ellis Henry, of the Jack- sonville Regional HUD office, as well as Tampa Housing Authority Board members Dr. Hazel Harvey, and Rubin Padgett, who were proud that this well-deserved recognition was received.

Jerome Ryans, President and CEO of the Tampa Housing Authority said, “To be recog- nized by your peers for this State award is such an honor. It is confirmation that we are indeed moving in the right direction.”
Unity Event Planned To Bring Community Together

Members of the community hosted a com- munity event designed to bring the community together. The event was planned for June 7th. However, inclement weather affected the turnout.
Now, members of Positive Images Commit- tee have decided to host the event again. This time it will take place on Sunday, October 16th. Entitled “Unity In The Community,” the event will be held at Centennial Park, 1800 E. 18th Avenue, (corner of 8th Avenue and E. 18th Av- enue), from 12 noon until 6 p.m.
Marvin Knight, Coordinator of the event said, “The weather caused us to cancel it. And we had so many things that members of the community could benefit from. So, we decided to reschedule it.
“We are going to have the same things planned and more. We have the support of the churches, we are going to have services about health, education, jobs, etc. We are going to have the same vendors and more. And we are inviting anyone who wants to be a part of it to come and join us. It is free and open to all members of the community.”
The Committee is inviting people from all walks of life, all ethnicities, all cultures, all ages, and all religions to come together in an afternoon of fun and entertainment. They want members of churches, organizations, busi- nesses local government, as well as individuals and families to participate in the vent.
The event will feature vendors offering a wide variety of different types of food, infor- mation ranging from health to finances, and family-oriented activities. There will be a his-

torical displays that discuss the origins and story of various fractions of the community will be at the park.
There will be an antique and classic car show. The Tampa Fire Department will have its equipment on display, while the Tampa Po- lice Department and Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office will have Mounted Police and its vehicles on display.
The three honorary Co-Chairpersons are Mayor Bob Buckhorn, Tampa Police Chief Eric Ward, and David Gee, the Hillsbor- ough County Sheriff.
