CVS Drugstore Chain Is Buying Aetna Health
First Caribbean Businessman In U. S. Granted Franchise License Kills Himself
  Insurance Company
NEW YORK — Authorities in New York, not to mention, fam- ily members and friends, are try- ing to figure out why 57-year-old Lowell Hawthorne, the CEO of Golden Krust Caribbean Bak- ery & Grill, killed himself inside his Bronx factory Saturday.
The NY Daily News reports that Hawthorne, 57, shot him- self inside the Park Ave. build- ing.
“He was a good boss, humble and a good businessman,” said Pete Tee, 27, a former em- ployee.
Hawthorne founded and opened the first Golden Krust store 198 and his company grew nationally to over 120 restau- rants in nine states.
An associate of Haw- thorne’s was also perplexed as to why the businessman would kill himself.
CVS, the second-largest U. S. drugstore chain is buy- ing Aetna, the third-largest health insurer.
According to reports, shoppers will eventually find more clinics in CVS stores and more services they can receive through the network of nearly 10,000 locations that the company has built.
Patients also may find the CVS-Aetna combination much more involved in man- aging their care, especially for those with expensive chronic conditions like dia- betes.
The $69 billion deal an- nounced Sunday evening will push the drugstore chain more forcefully in a direction it has been heading for years, according to Wall Street ana- lysts. Aetna previously
agreed to buy rival insurer Humana for $34 billion, but that deal was blocked by the Department of Justice. A judge ruled in favor of the DOJ in January, saying that the combination of the two companies would have been anticompetitive.
The company, which stopped selling tobacco prod- ucts in 2014 to further bur- nish its image as a care provider, already runs about 1,100 clinics and has been steadily expanding the health care it offers.
Lowell Hawthorne fatally shot himself in his Bronx Factory.
The NY Daily News reports that some of Hawthorne’s em- ployees said they suspected something was off when they ob- served his car parked oddly out- side the factory. The silver Tesla 85D was left in the road blocking a lane of traffic.
Hawthorne’s rags-to- riches story was set in motion in 1981 when he followed several relatives to the U. S. from Ja-
maica in search of opportunity. Before he founded Golden Krust – which was inspired by his father’s bakery in Jamaica – Hawthorne briefly worked as
an accountant for the NYPD. According to its website, Golden Krust also had the dis- tinction of beingthe first Caribbean-owned business in the U.S. to be granted a franchise
license.

emotional distress and were subjected to false arrest when former police officer Jeronimo Yanez fatally shot Castile dur- ing a traffic stop. Reynolds, who was in the car with her daughter, live-streamed imme- diately after the shooting.
After a backlash on social media and criticism from the Sheriff’s Office, McBroom said his tweet was misunderstood,
according to City Pages. He said his post was not racist, claiming instead that he’s referring to women in general who are strung out on drugs and poor but prance into court with ex- pensive pocketbooks.
A jury found Yanez not guilty of manslaughter and two counts of endangering Reynolds and her daughter, who was 4 years old at the time.

Her mother believes her
daughter was confronting her bully. “I saw my daughter was
scared,” explained Harris. Although hard to watch, her parents believe that people
need to see it.
“She was devastated when
she found out that it had made it to Musical.ly,” Davis ex- plained.
Just two weeks after the video was posted, Ashwanty went home and hanged herself in her closet. She spent two weeks in the Children’s Hospi- tal on life support before dying on Wednesday, November 29, 2017.
