White House And Protest News
Billionaire Who Believes In Charter Schools And Vouchers Confirmed As Secretary Of Education
Betsy DeVos, a wealthy Republican donor with almost no experience in public educa- tion, was confirmed by the Senate as the nation’s educa- tion secretary on Tuesday, but only with the help of a historic tiebreaking vote from Vice President Mike Pence after weeks of protests and two de- fections within her own party.
The 51-to-50 vote capped an all-night vigil on the Senate floor, where, one by one, De- mocrats denounced Ms. DeVos to a mostly empty chamber. But they did not get a third Republican defection that would have stopped Ms. DeVos — a billionaire who has devoted much of her life to promoting charter schools and vouchers — from becoming the steward of the nation’s nearly 100,000 public schools.
It was the first time a vice president has been summoned to the Capitol to break a tie on a cabinet nomination.

megadonor and advocate of charter schools — and to de- vote their energy to scrutiniz- ing the Department of Education.
The fight to derail DeVos, while unsuccessful, has united a wide variety of advocates who care about education, said Lily Eskelsen García, president of the National Edu- cation Association, the na- tion’s largest union. The union now has a “contact list to die for,” she said.
Trump Blasts Nordstrom For Dropping Ivanka’s Fashion Line
President Donald Trump on Wednesday again used his platform to deal with a personal matter. He blasted luxury department store Nordstrom for dropping his daughter Ivanka Trump’s label, a move that drew im- mediate criticism for further blurring the line between Trump’s administration and his family’s businesses.
“My daughter Ivanka has been treated so unfairly by @Nordstrom. She is a great person -- always pushing me to do the right thing! Terri- ble!” Trump tweeted Wednesday morning.
Nordstrom had announced on Feb. 3 that it would stop carrying Ivanka Trump’s

While Nordstrom contends the decision was solely a business one, the publicly traded company has delved into the Trump administra- tion’s controversial actions.
Omarosa Heckled While Shopping For Bridesmaid Dresses
Omarosa Manigault cried some Uncle Tom tears last weekend after she was ha- rassed while bridesmaid dress shopping.
The former “Apprentice” vil- lain, who announced her en- gagement to Florida pastor John Allen Newman last summer and will appear in an episode of TLC’s “Say Yes to the Dress,” was with a cohort of five bridesmaids.

According to the Washing- ton Post, who was tipped off by a source, two women were “letting her have it” and fol- lowed her. Manigault noti- fied store staff and was later escorted to her car.
The two women were asked to leave the store.
