Rays To Host ‘Jackie Robinson Day’
In 1997, under the direc- tion of Commissioner Bud Selig, the jersey of Jackie Robinson was retired. The No. 42 was retired across all of Major League Baseball in an unprecedented tribute.
In recent years, the play- ers have honored Robinson by wearing that number on his day.
On Friday, April 21st, the Tampa Bay Rays will host their Annual “Jackie Robinson Day.” The day focuses on his breaking the color barrier on Opening Day, April 15, 1947.
Robinson became the first Black athlete to play Major League Baseball in the 20th Century. He signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers and was named “Rookie of the Year” in 1947. Two years later, Robinson was named National League MVP, and World Series Champion in 1955.
Robinson was born in Cairo, Georgia. He was the
