The Hillsborough County Medical Examiner has com- pleted its investigation and determined the cause of death of an inmate. The death took place in April 2019. The death took place at the Hillsborough County Jail.
The Medical Examiner’s report stated the cause of death of Alstin Greggory Guice, 42, of Tampa, is nat- ural causes. His death was attributed to hypertensive heart disease.
Guice was taken into custody on April 4th by the Tampa Police Department. He was charged with viola-

tion of a domestic violence injunction.
According to police, on April 5th, around 9 a.m., po- lice said Guice had initiated a confrontation with
deputies while trying to force his way out of his cell. He is said to have continued to be combative and uncontrol- lable. Medical intervention was ordered in an attempt to calm him.
A short time later, Guice appeared to be in medical distress. Emergency Medical Services were called. After the jail medical staff and the Hillsborough County Fire Rescue stabilized him, Guice was transported to Tampa General Hospital, where he died.
The Sheriff’s Office did not release any additional in- formation.
Police Officer Charged With Making False Report
A police officer has been arrested in connection with a child abuse case. He was also terminated as a result of the investigation.
Last Friday, a warrant was issued for Officer William Long charging him with making a false re- port with the Department of Children and Families. He was terminated for violating the department’s General Orders of unlawful conduct and conduct unbecoming an officer. The charge is a 3rd felony.
Long turned himself in to the Polk County Jail and has been released.
According to police, on May 28, 2019, the Lakeland Police Department received a complaint involving Officer William Long involving his conduct in reporting an al- leged child abuse case. It was related to an on-going child custody case.
On May 20, 2019, Long contacted the Department of Children and Families (DCF) Child Abuse Hotline to re-

port concerns of child abuse/child neglect while his child was in the care of a babysitter utilized by the child’s mother.
Long used his personal cellular telephone to place the call. Long stated on the recorded line that he wished to be anonymous and did not report his name and status as a law enforcement officer, as required by law.
On the recording, he re- ported he observed unex- plained scratches on the child’s back and a puncture wound on his hand. How- ever, on the following day, a DCF investigator met with the child and babysitter. The investigator didn’t observe any evidence or indications of child abuse.
As part of normal inves- tigative protocol, the investi- gator contacted Long by telephone and it was deter- mined to be the same num- ber as the one used to make the anonymous complaint. Long told the investigator at that time that he had no con- cerns about the child’s wel- fare while the child was in the care of the babysitter.
Long didn’t interview with detectives based on the advice of his attorney, police said.
