Hillsborough County Emergency Policy Group Approves Curfew
BY IRIS B. HOLTON Sentinel City Editor
On Monday, members of the Hillsborough County Emergency Policy Group (EPG) approved a county- wide curfew. The curfew is a measure to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.
The EPG members ap- proved the measure that went into effect immediately, by a vote of 5-3. County Commissioner Les Miller, Jr., proposed the curfew. “From what I’m see- ing, people are not paying at- tention and not observing
social distancing. They just aren’t,” he said.
In response to the virus, officials initiated a “Safer-At- Home” order on March 27th. The order means that people should not go out unless it is necessary. Both the Tampa Police Department and the Hillsborough County Sher- iff’s Office have received nu- merous complaints about the order being violated.
The curfew is in effect until further notice. Violator of the curfew order, which goes into effect from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m., faces 60 days in jail and a $500 fine.
Miller, Jr., Commis- sioner Kimberly Over- man, Commissioner Sandra Murman, Plant City Mayor Rick Lott, Tampa Mayor Jane Cas- tor, Temple Terrace Vice Mayor Andy Rosa, Hills-
borough County Sheriff Chad Chronister, Hills- borough County School Board Chairperson Melissa Snively, and Hills- borough County Administra- tor Mike Merrill. Merrill is a non-voting member.
