Local
Summer Program Trains East Tampa Teens
For the past three sum- mers, the CDC of Tampa, Ernest Coney, President/CEO, has part- nered with the City of Tampa to provide training to local youth hired as part of the Clean City summer youth em- ployment program. The pro- gram targets teenagers living in the East Tampa area.
This year, the CDC part- nered with local business owners who invested a total of 6 hours in training the youth on topics such as ac- countability, goal setting and sacrifice. The team of profes- sionals was led by Gary T. Hartfield, owner of Serenity Village.
Last year, Mr. Hartfield published a memoir chroni- cling his personal, educa- tional and business journey to stand against the obstacles of life, including being a first
generation college student, to achieve success.
Recently, Hartfield com- mitted to developing a youth empowerment program based on his memoir, titled Stand. The youth were the first group to receive in-depth training based on the pro- gram.
The final training was conducted on Tuesday, July 26, 2016, at the CDC of Tampa. During this training, Hartfield was joined by Va- lerie Goddard of the God- dard Group, Jalem Robinson of Brothers United Building Brothers Al- liance, Vernetta Williams of Chrysalis Consulting, LLC and Carl Thomas.
The team shared princi- ples, life experiences and fa- cilitated activities and break-out sessions to dia- logue with youth about the

various topics. The students were also tasked with work- ing weekly towards their goal over the course of the 6-week program. Youth who success- fully documented their work, within their social media group, received $100 each.
The East Tampa Partner- ship and Evangeline Best provided continued support for the youth. The team will also provide support to the youth throughout the school year.
