Rihanna Breaks Michael Jackson’s Record
Academy Award Nominees More Diverse After #OscarSoWhite Boycott, But Who Wins Will Show If Anything Has Changed
The movies ‘Moonlight’, Fences and Hidden Figures are all up for ‘Best Picture’ award. ‘Moonlight has 8 nominations. Octavia Spencer in ‘Hidden Fi- gures’ and Denzel Washington and Viola Davis are all nomi- nated for best actor and support- ing actress. Along with Ruth Negga and Naomie Harris. The 89th Oscars airs Sunday, Febru- ary 26th.
RiRi celebrated her 29th birth- day on February 20th by landing her 30th Hot 100 top 10 hit this week.
Andre 3000 Is New Face And Creative Director Of Shoe And Outerwear Brand
Rihanna has joined an elite chart club after landing her 30th Billboard Hot 100 top 10 hit.
“Love on the Brain” has jumped up five spots to num- ber eight on the new count- down, breaking a tie with Michael Jackson for the 3rd most top 10 songs.
She now has appeared on 30 tracks that have hit the top 10. Only Madonna and the Bea- tles have more with 38 and 34, respectively.
After two years of #Oscar- SoWhite, this year there are 3 films with predominantly Black casts nominated for Best Pic- ture; 4 films with Black direc- tors nominated for Best Documentary, a record 6 Black acting nominees and a best di- rector nominee at the 89th Os- cars hosted by Jimmy Kimmel,. The ceremony airs LIVE Sunday, February 26th on ABC at 8:30 p.m.
Movies, Fences, Loving, Moonlight, and Hidden Fig- ures with actors, Denzel Washington, (Actor in Lead- ing Role); Viola Davis, (Ac- tress in Supporting Role); Mahershala Ali, (Actor in Supporting Role); Octavia Spencer, (Actress in Support- ing Role); Naomie Harris (Actress in Supporting Role) and Ruth Negga (Actress in Leading Role) all nominated for their roles proves that protest and boycotts get re- sults, even in the land of make believe.
We also have to applaud the Academy, led by Black woman, Cheryl Boone Isaacs, for fi-
nally being willing to go beyond the types of Black roles that have usually been given recog- nition—slave, dirty cop, asex- ual housekeeper, hyper-sexualized single mother—and see characters who speak to the complexity of the Black experience in Ame- rica as worthy of acknowledge- ment.
The true shine of the night will be the movie, ‘Moonlight’, written and directed by Miami (Liberty City) native, Barry Jenkins. “Moonlight” has been nominated for 8 Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Di- rector, Best Supporting Ac- tress, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Adapted Screenplay.
That’s pretty amazing for a movie that cost a mere $5 mil- lion dollars to make. Jenkins, a total outsider who made his first feature, “Medicine for Melancholy,” for $15 thousand dollars, is now a pillar of the in- dustry—already. ‘Selma’ and master history storyteller, Ava Duvernay is also nominated for her documentary ‘13th’.
