Movie Reviews/Horoscopes/Soaps
Unfriended (2014) - A group of online chat friends (Heather Sossaman, Matthew Bohrer) find them- selves haunted by an evil spirit using the Youtube account of their dead friend. You have to give this horror movie credit for being different. Cyberbul- lying is a serious problem. Made $16M. (Budget N/A). ***.
The Longest Ride - Di- rector George Tillman, Jr. (Barbershop, Notorious, Soul Food) directs this drama/ro- mance film about a former champion bull rider (Scott Eastwood) and a college stu- dent (Britt Robertson) trou- bled relationship. Their relationship interwined with a much older man (Alan Alda), as he reflects back on a past love. If you like romance films, then this one is for you. Made $23M. (Budget N/A). ***1/2
Furious 7 - You already know what to expect from the Fast and Furious franchise. Fast cars, amazing fight scenes, pretty girls, and unbe- lievable stunts. Director James Wan put all that in this 2 hrs./20 mins. action movie and we wanted to see how the untimely and tragic death of superstar Paul Walker would end. Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel) and his family of street racer (Paul Walker, Michelle Ro- driquez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Dwayne ‘The Rock” Johnson, and new- comer Natalie Emmanuel) have to protect themselves from Special Ops assassin (Jason Statham) who pledged vengeance for his brother, left brain dead by Dom’s crew in Part 6. Emotional tribute to Paul Walker at the end. Ac- tion-packed and very enter- taining. Try to catch it in the IMAX theater for the sound. Still No. 1 at box office. Made $294M / Foreign $857M. (Budget N/A). **** and then some.
Home (2015) - An alien named Oh (voiced by Jim Par- son) is on the run from his own people, lands on Earth and makes friends with Tip (voiced by Rihanna), who is on a quest of her own. Kids will love this animation. Made $142M. (Budget $135M). ****
Get Hard - Hedge Fund millionaire, James King (Will Ferrell) is accused of fraud and set for prison at San Quentin. So, he seeks out help from Darnell Lewis (Kevin Hart) who will get him ready for life behind bars. Also starring T.I. as the leader of a street gang. This movie was hilarious!!! Must-see for laughs. Made $73M. (Budget $40M).
****
Insurgent - The first movie ‘Divergent’ was very good and made $288M world- wide. The second Divergent series “Insurgent” stepped up the action. Beatrice Prior (Shailene Woodley) had to fight her inner emotions and a powerful government (Kate Winslett, Jai Courtney, Mekhi Phifer), which threatened to destroy her society. She gets help from her boyfriend (Theo James) who is willing to die for her. Action-packed, and if you can, watch it in 3-D. Enjoyed it! Made $120M U.S. / Foreign $142M. (Budget $110M). ****
Cinderella (2015) - Dis- ney’s theme ‘Have Courage And Be Kind” was a winner in this classic fairy tale. The story follows the life of young Ella (Lily James) whose father re- marries following the death of her mother. Her cruel step- mother (Cate Blanchette) and daughters mistreat Ella throughout her life. She finds hope when she meets a stranger (Richard Madden) in the forest. Adults and young girls will enjoy this film. Made $186M. (Budget $95M). ****
Run All Night - A mobster hit man Jimmy Conlon (Liam Neeson) has one night to fig- ure out how to save his son, Mike (Joel Kinnaman), from the mob boss (Ed Harris), who wants Mike to pay for the death of his son. This crime thriller was a real nail biter. Neeson is back on top after the disappointing ‘Taken 3’. Com- mon also stars as the assassin on the hunt for Conlon’s son. Must-see! Made $26M. (Bud- get $50M). ****
Chappie - Director Neil Blomkamp (District 9) brings to life the first robot named Chappie (Sharito Copley) with the ability to think and feel for himself. Chappie has to learn how to survive the mean streets of South Africa. Also starring Hugh Jackman, Dev Patel and Sigourney Weaver. Very violent. This movie started slow, but ended up as a well-written film. Surprisingly, good, nice twist at the end. Must see for sci-fi fans. Made $31M. (Budget $49M). ****
Focus - A con man (Will Smith) introduces a young woman (Margot Robbie) to the tricks of his trade. Three years later, the two see each other again in Argentina when he is asked by a race car bil- lionaire to set-up a con on his rival owner. Must-see to learn how the con game business operates. Very entertaining and interesting. Made $53M U. S. / Foreign $97M. (Budget $50M). ****
