   JAMES WILLIAM HANSON, JR.
MATTHEW KORATTIYIL
An inmate facing several charges, including murder, report- edly attempted to take his own life Tuesday. The incident took place at the Falkenburg Road Jail.
According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, around 8:30 a.m., James Hanson, Jr., went into the yard during recreation and shower time and attempted to com- mit suicide by hanging. He report- edly used a sheet concealed under his towel intended for showering.
Hanson, 39, is said to have tied the sheet to a basketball goal in the recreation area and hung him- self. However, a deputy noticed Hanson attempting to harm him- self and intervened. The deputy quickly began performing CPR on Hanson and called EMS. Hanson was transported to Tampa General Hospital. He was admitted to the hospital and listed in critical condi- tion, police said.
Hanson was arrested last Tuesday and is facing several charges. He is accused of robbing a bank, carjacking the owner of a ve- hicle, and then killing the carjacking victim.
According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, the incident that ended with a murder began around 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, when an armed suspect entered the Cen- terState Bank, in Valrico.
After robbing the bank, the man encountered 68-year-old Matthew Korattiyil. He pointed a gun at Korattiyil, and fled the scene with Korattiyil inside his 2019 Lexus SUV, police said.
Deputies located and pursued the vehicle until the suspect crashed it, causing it to overturn near the in- tersection of S. St. Cloud Avenue and Highway 60. The driver of the vehicle, later identified as James Hanson, Jr., hit another vehicle, but was apprehended.
At the time he was taken into custody, Korattiyil was not inside the vehicle. Detectives began an ex- haustive search for the missing vic- tim.
The body of Korattiyil was dis- covered around 4 p.m., Tuesday, outside the Sacred Heart Knanaya Catholic Community Center, 2620 Washington Road, in Valrico. The church is less than 5 minutes from the location where he was carjacked and kidnapped, police said.
Hanson reportedly gave a full confession to robbing the bank and strangling Korattiyil to death.
Hanson is charged with first- degree murder, carjacking, grand theft of a motor vehicle, kidnapping, resisting arrest with violence, and armed robbery.
