Tuesday, December 1st, is recognized as World AIDS Day. The day or recognition was designed to bring the deadly disease into focus and to create awareness.
Several organizations have joined forces to provide free testing and awareness in the Tampa Bay Area. Rev. Dr. James Favorite, Sen- ior Pastor of Beulah Baptist Institutional Church, is the Board Chairperson of the Na- tional Black Leadership Com- mission on AIDS (NBLCA).
NBLCA, in collaboration with Coalition of 100 Black Women, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and DACCO, will provide testing and awareness information to members of the community. The testing will take place from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m., at the church, 1006 W. Cypress.
Dr. Favorite said, “We believe testing is the key to eliminating this disease in our lifetime. If everyone could get tested and know what their status is, then we can begin to act appropriately in our conduct.
“During the last two years, there has been an increase in

the disease being diagnosed.” He further said that there are more cases in women, but the numbers have increased
in both sexes.
“It used to be a time when
a diagnosis of HIV was an au- tomatic death sentence. But, that is not the case anymore. People who receive the proper treatment, take their medication as directed, and watch their diets can prevent the disease from developing into AIDS. But, the key is to become aware of the disease, get tested, and then conduct yourself in the appropriate manner.”
The testing is free and the event is open to the public. Light refreshments will also be served.
Rev. T. Raines spoke during the anniversary celebration.
