School Board To Vote On Dr. Berry Center
DR. FRANKYE A. BERRY ...Former students want Media Center named in her honor
The Hillsborough County School Board will vote on nam- ing the Media Center (Library) at G. S. Middleton High School for Dr. (Miss) Frankye A. Berry Tuesday, June 13 at their 3 p. m. meeting.
Dr. Berry taught English at the original Middleton High School from 1934-1971, after which the school was converted to an 8th-9th Grade Center. Dur- ing most of those years she was head of the English Depart- ment and directed the school’s annual plays. Her last assign- ment in Hillsborough County was at Hillsborough High School.
Dr. Berry positively im- pacted thousands of African-
American students during the era of segregated schools, while always demanding excellence from her students. The original proposal to name a building on the school’s campus was pre- sented in 2001.
“We’re asking all loyal Tigers to attend the June 13th meeting, wear Maroon and Gold and show some of that ’ole Middleton Spirit’ in sup- porting recognition of Dr. (Miss) Berry,” said Fred Hearns, historian of the Mid- dleton High School Alumni As- sociation.
Persons wishing to speak for 2-3 minutes in support of this proposal may do so by ar- riving prior to 3 p. m. and sign- ing up to speak. Luvator Nelson is president of the Middleton High School Alumni Association and Dr. Kim Moore is principal of Middle- ton High School.
