Man Convicted Of Rape Re-Sentenced To Life
KENDRICK MORRIS
Last week, a judge sen- tenced a Tampa man to life in prison. He was convicted of two brutal rapes committed when he was 15 and 16 years of age.
Circuit Court Judge Chet Tharpe originally sentenced Kendrick Morris, to 65 years in prison. Morris ap- peared before Judge Tharpe a second time because of the changes in sentencing laws handed down to juveniles.
The Florida Supreme Court ruled that sentencing must offer juveniles a chance of re- lease. The changes mean that judges must consider factors such as age, maturity, and in- tellectual capacity.
However, Judge Tharpe said, “These offenses are not attributable to transient im- maturity.”
Morris was convicted of raping a young woman who was at the Bloomingdale Li- brary to return books on the night of April 24, 2008. The attack left the young woman who was a high school senior, blind, unable to walk, speak, or eat.
His DNA linked him to the rape of a 62-year-old daycare worker who was attacked as she opened the business. That incident occurred 10 months before the attack at the library.
Morris’s case will be re- viewed again in 20 years by the courts.
