Earlier this month, a fed- eral judge extended the voter registration date by seven days because of inclement weather. Thousands of people were evacuated because of Hurri- cane Matthew.
As a result, more than 64,000 people became regis- tered voters. Of that number, approximately 10,000 regis- tered in Hillsborough County.
Initially, the deadline to register in order to participate in the General Election was Tuesday, October 11th. How- ever, U. S. District Judge Mark Walker extended the time period until Tuesday, Oc- tober 18th to allow anyone dis-
placed by Hurricane Matthew a chance to register.
Last Thursday, Florida De- mocrats asked Judge Walker to provide the newly registered voters rapid verifi- cation so that they could vote during the Early Voting pe- riod. However, Judge Walker rejected the request.
Craig Latimer, Supervi- sor of Elections for Hillsbor- ough County said, “Provisional ballots are a good thing, be- cause it means we don't have to turn away a voter and we have more time to check and make sure they are an eligible voter. As soon as we verify their eligibility, their votes will be accepted without the voter needing to do anything else.
“Voters who registered to-
ward the end of the registra- tion period can check their voter registration status at VoteHillsborough.org or by calling us at 744-5900 before they go out to vote, to see if their information has already been entered in our system."
Early Voting in Hillsbor- ough County began on Mon- day, October 24th. And, depending on when that per- son goes to the polls, it is pos- sible that his or her information has not been en- tered in the system.
Ms. Gerri Kramer,
spokesperson for the Hillsbor- ough County Supervisor of Elections Office said, “All of the voters should be in the sys- tem by November 8th and they shouldn’t have any problems.”
