Rapper Gets Jail Time For Kicking Fan
On Wednesday, rapper Kevin Gates was sentenced to 180 days in jail on a misde- meanor battery charge.
The charge came as the re- sult of an incident in August 2015 when 30-year-old Gates was filmed kicking a woman in the chest during a concert in Lakeland.
Gates pleaded not guilty and said he was defending himself against an aggressive fan under Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” law. He said the victim, Mi- randa Dixon, was trying to pull him off the stage, and when he couldn’t stop her, he used necessary force to protect him- self.
An attorney representing Gates said his client’s foot did- n’t actually touch Dixon, and she was trying to gain damages

in an upcoming civil trial.
A six-person jury found Gates guilty, and the judge re- jected the state’s request for 60 days in jail with a year of pro- bation and mandatory anger management classes, choosing
instead to triple the sentence.

Since being released from federal prison in August 2016 on several firearm charges, Morrell has been on a drug- fueled crime spree, victimizing several businesses throughout East Tampa and Hillsborough County.
