3 Ways Your Phone Is Hurting Your Health (And How to Fix It!)
Bumble Bee Tuna
Bumble Bee Foods an- nounced the recall of 3 types of their Chunk Light Tuna due to problems in the commer- cial sterilization process.
In an announcement posted on their website, the company said that the process deviations could result in con- tamination by spoilage organ- isms or pathogens, which could lead to life-threatening illness if the products are consumed.
The products are marked with a can code that starts with a “T.” The 3 products being re- call are 5 oz. Bumble Bee Chunk
These days, we’re all pretty much glued to our smartphones. And while they’ve made our lives easier in so many ways smartphones are also hurting our health in surprising ways.
Here are a few things you should adhere to:
Unhealthy Smartphone Habit #1:
Dropping Your Head To Text
Tilting your head down while texting is like having the force of 60 pounds (about four bowl- ing balls!) on your neck, according to a recent study in the journal Surgical Technology Interna- tional. It could lead to neck and back problems down the line.
Fix it: Bring your phone up to chest height when you text, then look down with your eyes, rather than lowering your head. Your arms might tire, but that’s a good thing: It will force you to take breaks.
Unhealthy Smartphone Habit #2: Resting On Your Elbows
Resting on your elbows when texting or read- ing can increase pressure on the ulnar nerve, re- sulting in numbness and tingling in the ring and little fingers and tenderness in the funny-bone area. Plus, it might require surgery to treat it.
Fix it: If you do prop yourself up on your el- bows, make sure they’re extended beyond a 90- degree angle, to take some of the compression off and allow for more blood flow in the arms.
Unhealthy Smartphone Habit #3: Getting Alerts All Night Long
Keeping all your chimes and dings on at night can disrupt your sleep cycle—even if you don’t re- member hearing them. And lack of shut-eye can lead to anxiety, weight gain and other health is- sues.
Fix it: Download the Call Filter Alarm app (free, Android). It lets you choose whose calls and messages should go through in sleep mode while silencing the others. Have an iPhone? Try “Do Not Disturb.”

Brown Sugar Versus White Sugar
While you should limit your intake of both brown and white sugar, you may have heard that brown sugar is better for you. Brown sugar may contain slightly more essential nu- trients than white sugar, it isn't necessarily healthy.
Brown sugar is simply white sugar mixed with molasses. Therefore, brown sugar can hold its shape like wet sand, while white sugar cannot. Raw sugar is also generally brown in color, and forms when the juice of sugar cane evaporates.
Is Brown Sugar Better?
Molasses and brown sugar do contain more essential nutri- ents that white sugar, so choos- ing brown sugar over white is technically healthier. For exam- ple, a tablespoon of molasses is
a good source of dietary potassium -- and provides small amounts of calcium, magnesium and B vita- mins. However, the amount of the nutrients you'd be getting from brown sugar is very small and won't do much to meet
your daily nutrient needs. Furthermore, just like white sugar, molasses and brown sugar are added sugars that should be limited in your diet as much as possible to avoid un- wanted weight gain and in-
creased chronic disease risks. The AHA recommends most women limit added sugars to 100 calories or less per day, and men eat no more than 150 calo-
ries from added sugar daily.
