Serena Reaches U. S. Open Semi-Final
Tiger Woods Has Another
Serena Williams passed her toughest test so far at the U. S. Open to beat Karolina Pliskova and reach the semi-finals for a ninth con- secutive time Tuesday night.
Williams, seeded 17th, trailed 4- 2 in the first set but hit back to win 6- 4 6-3 against the Czech eighth seed.
Serena is seeking her first Grand Slam trophy since giving birth to daughter, Olympia last September.
If she wins it would be her 24th major title.
”I don't think I have another 10 years of having opportunities to be able to play and win championships," Williams said.
"Every match really means a lot to me. I kind of go out there and I just do the best that I can."
Williams faces Latvia's 19th seed Anastasija Sevastova, who knocked out last year’s defending champion, Sloane Stephens earlier on Tuesday, in the last four on Thurs- day (tonight).
Team And Is Chosen Captain
Milestone: Makes Ryder Cup
Serena defeated her sister, Venus over the weekend and her 2016 nemesis Karlona Pliskova on Tues- day to advance.
Six-time champion Williams has reached the semi-finals in her past nine appearances at Flushing Mead- ows, although missed the tourna- ment in 2010 with a foot injury and last year because she was pregnant.
Tiger Woods reached another milestone in his incredible comeback to golf on Tuesday.
Ryder Cup team captain Jim Furyk announced that for the first time since 2012, Woods will play for Team USA in the upcoming show- down with Team Europe.
Woods was one of three captain’s picks announced on Tuesday, at the midpoint of the FedEx Cup Playoffs, along with Bryson DeChambeau and Phil Mickelson.
Having won the last two PGA Tour events back-to-back, DeChambeau is the hottest player in golf, right now. He has three PGA Tour victories in 2018, and there has been talk that DeChambeau could potentially pair up with Woods in Ryder Cup group play.
In just one season back, Woods put himself on the cusp of qualifying for Team USA automatically, but he was a lock to be picked by Furyk.
Tiger Woods is finally getting his swing back and playing well.
Woods has two top-6 finishes in majors, and has 10 top-25s this sea- son.
If he qualifies for the season-end- ing Tour Championship, Woods will have played in six tournaments since the beginning of August.
