Allen Temple AME Church To Welcome Newly Assigned Pastor Thanksgiving Eve
BY GWEN HAYES Sentinel Editor
When the congregation at Allen Temple African Methodist Episcopal Church, 2101 Lowe St., Tampa, gathers for Thanksgiving Eve Service on Wednesday, No- vember 23, 2016, they will wel- come a new pastor, who arrived in Tampa on Monday.
Rev. Dr. Glenn B. Dames, Jr., will introduce himself and his family to Allen Temple dur- ing the 6:30 p. m. service. A Thanksgiving feast will immedi- ately follow the service.
He was appointed to the Tampa congregation earlier this month when the AME Planning Meeting was held by Bishop A. J. Richardson, Jr.
A native of Jacksonville, FL, Rev. Dr. Dames, Jr., has been the Senior Pastor at St. James A. M. E. Church, Titusville for the past 10 years. In Brevard County, Rev. Dr. Dames, Jr., has es- tablished himself as a commu- nity pastor, being visible in schools, hospitals, jails, homes and all facets of city and county government.
He has been featured in sev- eral major publications, served as president of the Brevard Branch NAACP, and is an active member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fra- ternity, Inc.
A graduate of Edwards Wa- ters College, Rev. Dr. Dames, Jr., 40, is also a graduate of Turner Theological Seminary at the Interdenominational Theo- logical Center (ITC), where he earned his doctorate. He earned the Doctorate of Ministry from the United Theological Seminary in Dayton, OH.
Rev. Dr. Dames, Jr., said he’s “excited about coming to Tampa – a growing city. I believe my skills are suited for Tampa. We are elated to be a part of this

great city.” He hopes to build on the strong legacy that Dr. David Green, Sr., left at Allen Temple.
“It won’t be overnight, we won’t get there in a day, but with the Lord’s help we will get there.”
He also referenced the legacy of Rev. Dr. Arthur T. Jones at Bible-Based Fellowship Church. “That’s a good roadmap to pat- tern ourselves after – that growth, community activity is where we’d like to be,” he said. He sees Allen Temple as the pin- nacle of this community.
Joining Rev. Dr. Dames, Jr., in Tampa will be his family: wife, Dr. Jennifer Dames, an assistant principal in the Brevard County School District; daugh- ters Detra, 21, a college student in Jacksonville and Jailynn, 12, a 7th grader; and Glenn, III, bet- ter known as Tre, 8.
The family is expected to join him fully at the close of the 2017 school term.
“It may be a little uncomfort- able for them at first – making new friends, but we have them involved in organizations like Jack and Jill. We’re sure they’ll feel much better when they get here and meet kids at the church and at school.”
Rev. Dr. Dames, Jr., will deliver his first worship service on Sunday, November 27th.

West Tampa Cigar Factory To Become Boutique Hotel
One of Tampa’s oldest cigar factories in West Tampa is slated to become a boutique hotel. The Balbin Brothers Cigar Factory, lo- cated on the corner of Howard Ave. and Nassau St., was purchased last week for $1.4 million. Mike Desai of Desai's My Hospitality Ho- tels of Louisiana purchased the 35,000 square foot build- ing in partnership with Sheila Patel of Tampa.
Just south of Interstate 275 in proximity of the Jew- ish Community Center, which is nearing completion, and a 198-unit apartment complex planned nearby, the building will possibly house 70 rooms.
