Thursday night, the Tampa Fire Department was called to extinguish a fire at a Tampa hotel. The cause of the fire was determined to be an elec- trical malfunction in one of the dec- orative light columns on the roof of the building.
Firefighters were notified of the
fire at the Marriott Waterside, 700 S. Florida Avenue, in downtown Tampa around 10 p.m. It was contained to the southwest corner of the roof and caused approximately $50,000 in damages.
It was originally believed that the fire was caused by roofing debris
from work completed earlier in the day.
However, investigators said the roofing work took place in a different location and was not related to the fire.
Officials said the fire was fueled by the decorative covering and frame
of the column. Hotel management quickly evac-
uated the guests at the hotel until the blaze was brought under control.
There were no injuries reported that were related to the fire, a spokesperson for the Tampa Fire De- partment said.
