Belmont Heights Little League To Host Clinic For Coaches And Parents
ALLEN ROUSE President of Belmont Heights Alumni Association
BY IRIS B. HOLTON Sentinel City Editor
The Belmont Heights Little League was created to provide a place for young African American boys to play baseball in 1968. As the organization continues its purpose, it holds different events throughout the year.
It will hold two events on Saturday, February 25th.
The first event is the Coaches and Parent Clinic that will take place at 10 a.m. at Middleton High School. It will be hosted by legendary Coach Billy Reed. Coach Reed has coached some of Tampa’s former little league mem- bers who have gone on to become household names in the Major League Baseball. They include: Dwight Gooden, Gary Sheffield, Derek Bell, Floyd Youman, Carl Everett, Kiki Jones, Vance Lovelace, and many oth- ers.
A retired educator, Coach Reed is a graduate of Middleton High School, where he played football, basketball, and baseball. He continued his education at Florida A & M University, where he became an out- standing athlete there as well. Coach Reed is also a FAMU Sports Hall of Fame inductee. He is also one of the founders of the Belmont Heights Little League.
He will be joined by
Dave Best, Ken Myers, and Woody Simmons.
The clinic will include a baseball circular that fo- cuses on basic baseball fun- damentals of pitching, hitting, and catching. There will be high school and col- lege players to conduct demonstrations during the clinic. It will also highlight safety needs such as concus- sion protocol, CPR, and other first aid training.
The organization extends an invitation to all parents and coaches to get involved as coaches or boosters. Any coaches planning to partici- pate must complete a back- ground check as mandated by the State of Florida.
Artis Gambrell, Jr.,
President of the Belmont Heights Little League said, “The youth baseball league has changed since 1968. Today, organized youth sports are a $7 billion indus- try with specialized training for kids. These legendary coaches are volunteering to support today’s Belmont Heights Little League coaches to continue the tra- dition and to make sure our kids in East Tampa receive the highest competitive training available.”
Allen Rouse, who is the son of Benjamin “Skin” Rouse, Sr., one of the founders of the organiza- tion, is the current president of the Belmont Heights Lit- tle League Alumni Associa- tion. “The Coaches Clinic was a long held tradition at
Belmont Heights in the past. It’s great to bring it back.
“We are proud to bring national programs such as Major League Baseball’s Pitch, Hit and Run, as well as Jr. Run Derby to our kids in East Tampa. It’s impor- tant that the alumni con- tinue to give back.”
John G. Greene, Mar- keting Coordinator for the Alumni Association said, “There are so many profes- sional ball players admitting that their moms taught them the fundamentals of their sports. We have de- cided to teach the mothers, too.”
