B-CU Wildcats Win MEAC-SWAC Championship Game In Atlanta
The Wildcats defeated the Tigers, 36-15 in the 15th MEAC-SWAC football game.
While Floridians were preparing for the effects of Hurricane Dorian, and the dormitories on the campus of Bethune-Cookman University were emptied for safety reasons, several alumni and friends of Bethune- Cookman University traveled from Tampa to Atlanta
to attend the MEAC-SWAC Challenge football game. The MEAC/SWAC Challenge, an early season matchup of HBCU football teams from the Mid-East- ern Athletic Conference (MEAC) and the Southwest Athletic Conference (SWAC), was in Atlanta for the second year at “Pete Petit Field” at Georgia State Sta-
dium.
The game was held on Sunday, September 1st, with
the Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman University, repre- senting the MEAC, and the Tigers of Jackson State University representing the SWAC. The 3 p. m. game aired on ESPN2, with more than 22,000 in the stands.
In the end, the Wildcats defeated the Tigers, 36-15. And, according to the announcers, the battle of the band at halftime was won by Bethune. (Photographs by Julia Jackson)
The Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman University and their coach, Terry Sims, hoist the MEAC- SWAC Challenge trophy after winning the game, 36-15.
Bethune’s Quarterback, Akevious Williams took home the MVP Offen- sive Player of the Game trophy.
The MVP Defensive Player of the Game trophy went to cornerback, Trevor Merritt.
B-CU’s Student Athletic Trainer is Ms. Brown of the Tampa Bay area.
B-CU’s Lynn Thompson, Vice Pres- ident for Intercollegiate Athletics; B- CU Head Coach Terry Sims, and the school’s new president, Dr. E. LaBrent Chrite with the MEAC-SWAC trophy.
Tyrese Spain (#84), sophomore wide receiver of Tampa’s Hillsborough High, had an opportunity to play in the game.
St. Petersburg photographer, G. “Pop” Lancaster was captured in the stadium.
Among those who attended the game were: Lucille Morris, Kevin Daniels, Past B- CU Chaplain; Gina Sanders, Audley Coakley, B-CU Trustee; Julia E. Jackson; and Pat and Dr. Bruce Miles.

Among the alumni and supporting friends who traveled to Atlanta for the MEAC/SWAC Challenge were: Audley Coakley, Ruth W. Holton, Raquel Hunter, Birdie Underwood, Wanda Womack, Betoria Watson, J. Mann, Renee Wiggins, Lisa Crim, Doris and Pavonne Scott, Lucille Morris, James McCanty, who organized the bus trip; Owen and Joyce Harris, Julia Jackson, Carter and Carie Hunter; and Pat and Dr. Bruce Miles.
