Couple Endows Scholarships To Honor Their Parents
Second Scholarship endowed at Howard University Medical School

Dr. George Franklin Cohen, Jr. and his wife, Mrs. Inez Eliza- beth (York) Cohen have endowed scholarships to honor their parents at 2 prestigious universities.
The Mary and George Cohen, Sr. Scholarship honors Dr. Cohen’s parents, who were from Washington, D. C. Since its founding in 2014, the scholarship has been distributed to 3 current medical students. The schol- arship is awarded to a third-year male student from either Washington, D. C., Maryland or Virginia, who is also in the 25% of his class.
According to information pub- lished in the Howard University Medical Alumni Association newslet- ter, Dr. Cohen grew up in Washing- ton, D. C. within walking distance of Howard University.
A nationally recognized clinical dermatologist and a Fellow of the

American Academy of Dermatology, Dr. Cohen served as an assistant professor at the University of South Florida Department of Dermatology and Skin Surgery (Tampa), and as an assistant professor at the University of Florida, Gainesville.
In 2015, Dr. Cohen founded a new residency training program at Florida State University, where he is
currently an associate professor of dermatology and the founding resi- dency program director.

Mrs. Inez Elizabeth (Liz) York- Cohen established the Ellis and Dorothy York Endowed Scholarship at Florida State University, Tallahas- see, to ‘pay it forward’ to deserving African-American students in the Col- lege of Education.
Mrs. Cohen credits her “success- ful career to the College of Education at Florida State University. My path- way began as a teacher, to school prin- cipal, to central office coordinator, to national educational consultant.”
A Tampa native, Mrs. York- Cohen is the only child of the late Mr. and Mrs. Ellis York. She spent 35 years in the field of education. She retired in 2010. Currently, Mrs. Cohen serves as a national educa- tional consultant and is sought by nu- merous school districts and non-profit organizations.
Mrs. Cohen is very involved in several FSU organizations. She is a Life Member of Jack and Jill of Amer- ica, Inc. and Alpha Kappa Alpha
Sorority, Inc. She is also a member of the Tampa Women’s Club and the Tampa Chapter of the Links, Inc.
Mrs. Cohen learned Wednesday that the 2016 $1,000 scholarship will be presented on October 1st.
The couple recently endowed a second scholarship with Howard Uni- versity Medical Alumni Association. The Inez Elizabeth and George Franklin Cohen, Jr. Scholarship will be distributed to students with finan- cial need in the top 50% of their class. Preference is given to African-Ameri- can students. The inaugural $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to a cur- rent medical student at HUMAA’s 18th Annual Scholarship Ceremony in March 2017.
Dr. Cohen said, “I owe my suc- cess in large part to the gift that Howard gave me and I vowed to show my gratitude. I endowed the scholar- ships which will provide $1,000 each to 2 students.” He will be celebrating his 40th reunion from Howard Univer- sity College of Medicine in May 2017.
Dr. and Mrs. George F. Cohen, Jr. are parents to 4 adult children and 3 grandchildren.
Retirement Celebration For 41 Years Of Service
The 41st Pastoral Appreciation and Retirement Celebration held at the DoubleTree Hotel was in honor of Elder Thomas Jefferson, and First Lady Mary Elizabeth Hannah Reed.
The event was well attended and supported by family, friends, pas- tors and members of Grace Mary M. B. Church.
Elder Dr. Jeffery Singletary gave an enlightenment on preachers and teachers that set the tone for the evening.
