MR. JACK BENJAMIN BAGLEY (BADR ABDULLAH)
On Wednesday, July 13, 2016, one of Tampa’s well known businessmen, Mr. Jack Ben- jamin Bagley, also known as, Badr Abdullah, made his grand exodus. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, July 23 at 2:00 p.m. at Ray Williams Me- morial Chapel, 301 N. Howard Avenue, Pastor Thomas Dozier, officiating and Dr. Clovis Dun- bar, nephew, eulogist. Inter- ment will follow in Myrtle Hill Cemetery.
Born October 29, 1934 on 213 W. Oak Ave, in his family home, and was educated in the Public Schools of Hillsborough County. He started his professional ca- reer at St. Joseph’s Hospital, and at Wolf Brothers. Like one of Wolf Brothers’ regular cus- tomers, Abe Brown, Mr. Bagley dressed to impress. He only wore clothes from Wolf Broth- ers, and would travel to New York to purchase his wardrobe. He was known as the best dressed Black man in Tampa. After St. Joseph and Wolf Broth- ers, Jack Benjamin established, owned and operated a shoe shine business, called “The Shoe Shine Man”, on Central Avenue, right next to Moses White’s “Cozy Cor- ner”. In the 1960’s, after the riots, Mr. Bagley moved up North. He moved back to Tampa to care for his father, Wallace Bagley. He resumed his business in his family home. He expanded his business to sell a variety of merchandise.
A few of his most loyal shoe shine customers were: Dick Greco, C. Blythe Andrews, Jr., Clarence Wilson, and S. J. Wil- son. He brought his business to the people, as a “Walking Sales- man” in Central Park and Tampa
Park Apartments. People called him “The Incense Man”, be- cause he always had an unlim- ited variety of unique fragrances. The brothers and sisters throughout the commu- nity loved him. Mr. Abdullah fought for his community when urban development began to en- croach to take over and demol- ish homes in Tampa Heights. Badr, a courageous voice for the people, was featured in “The Tampa Tribune” with his brother, Wallace Bagley, Jr., and in “The Weekly Planet” as a fighter for his neighborhood, his home, and his “Legacy”. Real estate investor Kenneth “Kenny” Rushing, negotiated for him. Abdullah’s strong posi- tive spirit inspired Mr. Rushing to highlight Badr in his com- pany’s national television com- mercial, on BET network.
Mr. Bagley never gave up on his fight to live and to recover. He was a Warrior to the end, until Jesus visited and said, “That’s enough! Let’s go home to Our Father God.” His great- est joys were annual trips to Ja- maica, his mother Josephine’s birthplace; rapping with the brothers and sisters in Central Park and Tampa Park, being around his children, grands, greatgrands, nieces and nephews-The Dunbars; and Reading in his down time.”
Loved ones gone before him: parents, Wallace Bagley and Josephine Whittingham Bagley; infant son, John D. Bagley; daughter, Jacquelyn Bagley Glispie; brothers, William A. Dunbar, Sr. and Wallace Bagley, Jr.; one sister, Josephine Margaret Bagley Brady.
Celebrating his life are: five of his children’s mother and best friend, Sarah Jones Gra- ham; children, Jack B. Bagley, Jr., Gennie C. Bagley, Louis C. Bagley and his wife Gail, William T. Bagley, Wanda L. Bagley, Michael Bagley, Adilah Abdullah and two others as his own, Ferristine Goldwine and Mary M. Cochran; ten grand- children; twelve great grand- children; brother, John A. Bagley (Bobbie); and a host of other sorrowing relatives and friends.
