President Ends Speech With Dedication To Our Awesome First Lady, Michelle
Having gotten through most of his farewell address main- taining his composure, it was towards the tail end when President Obama reached for a white handkerchief to wipe away tears as he thanked Michelle for accepting and blossoming in a role as First Lady.
“Michelle Lavaughn Robinson, girl of the South Side — for the past 25 years, you have not only been my wife, the mother of my chil- dren, you have been my best friend,” Obama said to a roar-

ing audience. “You took on a
job you didn’t ask for, and you made it your own with grace and with grit and with style and good humor.”
As the cameras panned to Michelle sitting in the front row, eldest daughter Malia could also be seen wiping away tears as she watched her father honor and admire her mother in front of thousands.
“You made the White House a place that belonged to every- body,” he said about the First Lady. “You have made me proud, and you have made the country proud.”
Sasha Obama’s Absence Sets Off Social Media; Malia Cries
President Obama used the conclusion of his last address partly to recognize his two daughters, who were just chil- dren when they first became residents of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue eight years ago.
When folks didn’t see Sasha Obama at her father’s farewell event Tuesday evening the in- ternet freaked out.
As President Obama gave an emotional farewell address to the nation from Chicago, cameras cut to familiar faces in the front row.
There was Vice President
Biden, Malia Obama, Michelle Obama, Michelle’s mama, but NO Sasha! Why, why, why was Sasha not there?
Well, there hasn’t been an of- ficial statement on the matter, but CBS News’ Mark Knoller tweeted out that a White House official confirmed the reason Sasha was unable to attend the event was because she had a test at school on Wednesday morning back in DC, and couldn’t fly out to Chicago without getting back home ridiculously late.
Watching from home, Sasha heard her dad say.
"Under the strangest of cir- cumstances you have become two amazing young women. You are smart and you are beautiful. But more impor- tantly, you are kind and you are thoughtful and you are full of passion," he said at the podium.
"You wore the burden of years in the spotlight so easily. Of all that I have done in my life, I am most proud to be your dad."
And her big sister, Malia’s tears said it all.
Tears And Cheers As President Obama Gives Farewell Speech
The First Family leaves stage after speech.
President Obama gave his farewell speech in Chicago late Tuesday, a break from presi- dential tradition. Typically, presidents give their farewell speeches from the confines of the White House, but the Presi- dent decided to take his back to where his campaign for presi- dent began nearly 10 years ago.
Popular but politically hum- bled, President Barack Obama said goodbye declaring that he hasn't abandoned his vi- sion of progressive change, but warned that it now comes with a new set of caveats.
"It falls to each of us to be those anxious, jealous guardians of our democracy," the President said. "To em- brace the joyous task we've been
given to continually try to im- prove this great nation of ours.” During his speech, Presi- dent Obama touted the ac- complishments of his presidency — yes, including the killing of Osama bin Laden — while laying out his vision for a better, more inclusive and less
divisive America. At times, the President be-
came very emotional, specially when speaking about wife Michelle and reminiscing on how far they had come through their life together.
At one point during the speech, the crowd even began to chant “four more years.” Ac- cording to CNN, President Obama had been planning the speech for months.
Sasha Obama was not in Chicago to hear her father’s speech due to a major exam at school the next day. However, her big sister was there and brought to tears by her dad’s words to them both.
BuzzFeed Journalists Say On Twitter They Could Not Stop Crying During President Obama’s Final Speech
A number of BuzzFeed editors and journalists turned to Twit- ter late Tuesday to share their emotions during President Barack Obama’s farewell ad- dress.
The tweets, some of which came from high-level editors, gained notoriety and criticism on Twitter during the speech because many saw them as par-
tisan and a break from journal- istic integrity.
In fact, BuzzFeed specifically bars their editorial employees from making public, partisan comments, however that did not stop the posts.
Some took down their com- ments however, some were so emotional and convicted, they left them up.
