Retired Longshoremen President, James C. Harrell, Sr. Dies After Illness
James “Chicken” Harrell, Sr., passed away Saturday, December 12, 2020, after a short hospital stay. He was 82 years old.
According to his wife, Mrs. Linda Harrell, Mr. Harrell did his normal dialysis treatment last Monday. After his treatment, he goes to the Hall (Longshoremen 1402 building) and join other retirees in dominoes games.
There are times when he has to go to the hos- pital for additional treatment. Last week was one of those times, Mrs. Harrell explained. His condition worsened and he passed on Saturday.
Mr. Harrell spent 60 years around the docks as a longshoreman with the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA), Local 1402. His health led to his retirement in 2018. Since then he has been enjoying his family, playing dominoes with the guys at the “Hall” and watch- ing TV. Before the pandemic struck, he also en- joyed baseball games in the area, and boating with family.
Harrell’s journey with the organization began with an uncle, Joseph Harrell, who was already a longshoreman, he explained in an in- terview in August, 2020.
“During those times you could get men off the streets to come work on the docks, in the hole. The jail was right down from the Hall. So Mr.Harvey (Sr.) would get the men when they were released from jail to do the work. There was a lot of loose work in the early years that you had to handle by hand,” he explained, “and we needed the men.”
When 9-1-1 struck, “That took away a lot of the jobs we had. We were left with only 3 or 4 gangs, with 7 men in each gang,” he said. The men then became forklift and crane drivers,” he said.
Seeing the dedication in his work, Perry Harvey, Sr., named him a Vice President of Local 1402. At that time, he was a Header and

continued to work on the docks.
In 1972, Perry Harvey, Jr., named him a
Deputy Vice President of the organization. That meant more office duties and traveling a lot on behalf of the organization. He became President of the organization after Harvey, Jr.’s death.
Harrell spent 2 terms as President of ILA, Local 1402. Harrell was honored by the men of Local 1402 this past August for his 60 years to the Union.
In additional to being a member of Local 1402, he was the Chairman of the Tampa Park Apartments Board of Directors for several years.
Funeral services are being held on Saturday, December 19, 2020, 11 a. m., at Sunset Memory Gardens Cemetery. (See Funeral Notice for addi- tional information)

     Almost...
Nineteen states’ attorney generals and 126 mem- bers of the House of Representatives were poised to disenfranchise millions of voters in Geor- gia, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin by peti- tioning the Supreme Court “to delay the Electoral College vote and prevent those four states from cast- ing their Electoral College votes for President-Elect Joe Biden.”
This act by 29% of the House of Representatives and 19 states and the actions of Donald Trump sup- porters have brought us close to a cult and act of sedition. Attorney Generals and Congressional Rep- resentatives usually take an oath to uphold the United States Constitution.
A cult is “a system of religious (or political) ven- eration (worship) and devotion directed toward a particular figure or object; misplaced or excessive admiration for a particular person or thing.”
Sedition is “conduct or speech inciting people to rebel against the authority of a state,” or that “in- spire a revolution that overthrows the government.”
When reviewing some of the speeches and ac- tions by President Donald Trump and some of his supporters, we were close to a scenario where more than 70 million voters were acting like a cult and supporting sedition against the United States.
Did the Republicans and Trump supporters really think that 80 million people would take the attack on the voters of four states and their seditious acts without standing up for their rights?
We were willing to allow the legal process to run its course, but we were not going to take such action lying down. No one man is worth losing the Ameri- can democracy.
By the way, those 19 attorney generals should never go into private practice because they have proven that they will take a case to court with no wit- nesses, no evidence, and no supporting data. Sounds dumb to us, what about you?
