'The Equalizer 2' Blasts Past 'Mamma Mia 2' For A Surprise Win At The Box Office

Shonda Rimes' Shondaland Unveils Netflix Series
LOS ANGELES – In the bat- tle of two very different sequels at the box office this week- end, Denzel Washington's action movie "The Equalizer 2" has narrowly won out over the ABBA jukebox musical "Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again."
Studios on Sunday estimate that the R-rated film about a re- tired CIA officer turned vigi- lante grossed $35.8 million from North American theaters for the weekend. It's the actor's first sequel and the biggest opening of director Antoine Fuqua's career. The first "Equalizer" opened similarly in
2014 and went on to earn more than $190 million worldwide.
Second place went to "Mamma Mia 2," which took in $34.4 million, a sum that was driven by an audience that was 83 percent female and 64 per- cent over the age of 25. The film brought back much of the orig- inal cast, including Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried and Pierce Brosnan, and added Cher, Andy Garcia and Lily James to the mix. Critics overall gave the sequel better marks than the first, which still went on to gross more than $600 million world- wide 10 years ago.
created by Rhimes, the previ- ously announced untitled Anna Delvey project, based on New York Maga- zine article about con artist Anna Delvey.
The slate touches on social is- sues with a series project based on Ellen Pao’s memoir Reset: My Fight for Inclusion and Lasting Chang, about her gen- der discrimination suit against former employer Kleiner Perkins, which exposed gen- der disparity in Silicon Valley’s hiring and promotion practices.
Also on the slate are Isabel Wilkerson’s award-winning book The Warmth of Other Suns, which will be adapted by Anna Deavere Smith,
currently the artist-in-resi- dence at the Center for Ameri- can Progress; and documen- tary Hot Chocolate Nutcracker, about Debbie Allen Dance Academy’s famous annual reimagining of The Nutcracker.
“I wanted the new Shonda- land to be a place where we ex- pand the types of stories we tell, where my fellow talented cre- atives could thrive and make their best work and where we as a team come to the office each day filled with excitement,” said Rhimes. “Ted (Sarandos) and Cindy (Holland) and everyone at Netflix have been incredible partners in making that happen. This is Shonda- land 2.0.”
Eleven months after she shook up the TV industry with her game-changing Netflix deal, Shonda Rhimes has un- veiled a slate of eight series that she has put in development at the streaming giant via her Shondaland banner. The slate runs the gamut from dra- mas to comedy (Sunshine Scout) to documentary (Hot Chocolate Nutcracker), from contemporary U. S. to 1840 Mexican-ruled state of Califor- nia (Pico & Sepulveda) to 1813 London (Bridgerton), with most scripted projects based on source material.
In Rhimes’ return to Washington and the White House where her ABC drama Scandal was set, she is producing The Residence, based on Kate Andersen Brower’s 2016 nonfiction book The Residence: Inside the Private World of the White House, an inside look into the lives of the first families — from the Kennedys to the Obamas — through the eyes of their staffers.
One of the eight series will be

Rapper XXXTentacion Had $50,000, Four Men Indicted For Killing Him To Get It
Before Pompano Beach rap- per XXXTentacion swung by Deerfield Beach’s Riva Mo- torsports to look at motorcy- cles on June 18, he stopped at a Bank of America branch to take out $50,000 in stacks of $100 bills.
That $50,000 was in the Louis Vuitton bag that gun- men stole when they fatally shot XXXTentacion as he and a friend tried to drive out of Riva’s parking lot, according to an arrest warrant.
Now, four men have been indicted for the crime. A Broward County grand jury in- dicted Michael Boatwright, Dedrick Williams, Robert Allen and Trayvon New- some Thursday on charges of first degree murder and armed robbery with a firearm of the 20-year-old whose given name is Jahseh Onfroy.
Boatwright and De-drick Williams, both 22, already are in Broward County jail on charges related to this incident and others. BSO has been trying to find Robert Allen, nicknamed “Big Rob” and “Fat Boy,” but the 5-foot-9,
XXXTentacion and the four men indicted for his murder.
300-pound Allen remains at large as does Newsome. Newsome is the only one of the four without prior criminal convictions.
The warrant says Allen was seen on surveillance video at Riva with Williams minutes before the robbery. Also, the warrant says Allen was with Boatwright and Tony Robinson, Williams’ close friend, when Robinson rented the 2017 Dodge Jour- ney detectives say blocked XXXTentacion’s BMW as he left Riva’s parking lot. Ar- rest warrants say witnesses and surveillance cameras saw
two gunmen jump out and take the Louis Vuitton bag, then take XXXTentacion’s life.
As described in Boat- wright’s arrest warrant, in- vestigators followed a De- drick Williams trail to the indicted quartet. Williams’ arrest warrant said Riva staff recognized him by his heavily tattooed face as a regular cus- tomer, and Riva’s surveillance cameras spotted him in the store buying a black mask be- forehand while wearing idio- syncratic orange sandals seen on his Facebook and Insta- gram accounts.
