Doctor Pleads Guilty To Distributing Controlled Drugs
A physician has pleaded guilty to distributing con- trolled substances not speci- fied in his Drug Enforcement Administration registration. He is facing a maximum penalty of 4 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.
A sentencing date has not been set for Dr. Jeffrey John Abraham, 52, who is formerly of Tampa.
According to court docu- ments, Dr. Abraham, a li- censed physician in Florida, was employed at two local Veterans Affairs hospitals, where he had applied for and obtained an official federal duty DEA registration num- ber. The number was limited to official federal duties and specifically restricted to gov- ernment personnel for offi- cial duties. It was not
transferrable.
Dr. Abraham resigned
in June 2017 and began working at a pain manage- ment clinic in Tampa. He did not obtain a new DEA regis- tration, officials said.
Between August 2017 and March 2018, while working at the clinic, Dr. Abraham reportedly wrote more than 2,000 prescriptions for Schedule II controlled sub- stances, including 1,600 pre- scriptions for hydromorphone and oxy- codone. He resigned from the clinic in March 2018.
Dr. Abraham report- edly admitted that his DEA registration did not author- ize him to prescribe or dis- tribute the controlled substances in a private clinic setting.
