Lakeland Branch NAACP 2017 Freedom Fund Banquet Held
‘The Power is in The Legacy...The Dream Contin- ues’ was the chosen theme for the Lakeland Branch NAACP’s 70th Annual Freedom Fund Banquet on Saturday, April 15, 2017.
Mr. Terry Coney, served
as Master of Ceremony. Hosts/Hostesses for the evening were: Beverly Boatwright, Linda Cohen, Patricia Jones, Emma Brooks, Monica Brooks, Verdell Silas and the NAACP Youth Council. Musical selec- tions were rendered by Pamela Calloway and Della Phelps.
The program opened with an Invocation rendered by Dr. Larry Rankins. Christel Graham, 2nd Vice President extended a warm welcome, after which, dignitaries and special guests were introduced by Larry Mitchell, CEO of New Life Outreach Ministry.
Sandra Jackson rocked
the house with a spoken word entitled ‘Black Music’. Greet- ings were rendered by Don Brown, 1st Vice President/NAACP Florida State Conference and Chief Larry Giddens of the Lake- land Police Department. James Neal introduced the keynote speaker, Ulysses J. Johnson, III, a retired Edu- cator of Polk County Schools and renowned author of ‘His- tory of Florence Villa’.
After the keynote address, Veronica Rountree recog- nized the sponsors and Keith Ward, Sr., 1st Vice President rendered the membership ap- peal. The Harold Silas Memo- rial Scholarship Fund was awarded by Don Selvage and Verdell Silas, the widow of the late Harold Silas. Reginald Ardis, President gave closing remarks. The evening came to a close with benediction by Dr. Rankins.

Belated Happy Birthday wishes are extended to: Jonathan Green of Auburn- dale, celebrating his special day on May 2nd; Tampa gen- tlemen, David Coleman and Everett Williams, Sr., who each celebrated their birthday on May 5th; and Lakeland lady Christel Graham, who cele- brated another natal day on May 6th.

This week’s Shaw-Nuf Shout-Out goes to Bartow na- tive, Freddie Stevenson. Who says dreams don’t come true? At age 22, Stevenson’s childhood dream of playing in the NFL has come true. He is headed for Chi-Town (Chicago) after signing a 3- year contract as an undrafted free agent with the Chicago Bears. Stevenson is a graduate of Bartow High School’s Class of 2013. He shined as a full- back at Florida State Univer- sity...now he’s a member of the NFL’s Chicago Bears.
Congratulations, Freddie!!! Continue to give God the glory.

Making A Difference
On Thursday April 27th, Lisa Wetmore, Coordinator of the Honors Program at Polk State College invited Dr. Shandale Terrell to be the keynote speaker for the Hon- ors Program Graduate Recog- nition Ceremony at Polk State
College, Lakeland Campus. Dr. Terrell’s motivational speech inspired and encour- aged the graduate students to: Keep God first, stay focused on their vision, goals and dreams on being successful in their fu- ture endeavors in education and in life. Dr. Terrell in- formed the graduates, he is a living testimony on not giving up. Dr. Terrell also informed the graduates to Dream Big
and to never, ever give up.
On Thursday April 27th, Dr. Terrell was appointed to serve on the Nova Southeast- ern University (NSU) Tampa Regional Campus Advisory Board in Tampa, Florida. Dr. Terrell was selected to serve on the Higher Education Advi- sory Board because of his: hard-work, educating, mentor- ing students and serving the
community.
