Annual Juneteenth Community Event
The East Tampa 5th Annual Juneteenth Event will take place on Saturday, June 24th from 2:30 p. m. to 5:50 p. m. This event has attracted many well-known artists and spon- sors. The event will be held at the College Hill Conference Center, 1002 E. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. There will be free food, continuous entertainment, and door prizes provided by the sponsors, voter education and vendors.
The Master, Mistress of Ceremony and Panelists of this educational and fun-filled event will express the purpose of Juneteenth as well as the cause and effects of slavery.
“Juneteenth is Black Folks’ 4th of July,” said Reverend Willie G. Dixon, Founder and CEO of COACH Founda- tion, Inc. He stated, “What a better way to celebrate this his- torical event in order to learn more about and discuss our rich past and the paths we need to take to get to our bright, awaiting future. Collectively, we can identify viable solutions to rebuild prosperous and healthy communities.”
Juneteenth is the oldest na- tional celebration commemo- rating the end of slavery in the
United States. Many slave masters in Texas purposely kept the news of FREEDOM from the slaves for 2-1/2 years after President Abraham Lincoln's preliminary Eman- cipation Proclamation.
The Juneteenth pan- elists will ask a variety of questions in search of re- alist solutions.
All youth, adults, elected of- ficials, candidates, community partners and religious leaders are invited to come rejoice, learn, and truly celebrate the true meaning of Juneteenth -- Freedom!

Health Department Offers Pre-Diabetes Classes
The Hillsborough County Health Depart- ment is offering the National Diabetes Preven- tion Program to the community. The event is free and open to all residents of Hillsborough County.
Its purpose is to help combat the growing health threat of obesity.
“Participating in a diabetes prevention class can cut your risk of getting Type 2 diabetes in half. And, since the class is free there’s no rea- son not to sign-up for one of our upcoming classes,” Dr. Leslene Gordon, Director, Community Health Division, for the Hillsbor- ough County Health Department said.
The Diabetes Prevention Program focuses on developing and maintaining healthy lifestyle changes. The curriculum includes a 16-week course with an eight-month follow-up support program led by trained Lifestyle Coaches that guide participants through the facts about healthy eating and physical activity, behavior change, techniques for achieving program goals, and problem solving.
The Diabetes Prevention Program reduces the risk of Type 2 diabetes in those who have pre-diabetes or are at high risk for pre-diabetes.
You are at higher risk of having pre-diabetes or Type 2 diabetes if you:
Are 45 years of age or older;
Are at an unhealthy weight;
Have a family member with diabetes;
Have family background that is African
American, Hispanic/Latino, American Indian, Asian American, or Pacific Islander; and
Are physically active less than three times a week.
