Despite Controversy:
Readers Will Continue Using Facebook
BY IRIS B. HOLTON Sentinel City Editor
Recently, the highly pop- ular Facebook Social Media website came under fire over its data practices. The con- troversy surrounds the com- pany and Cambridge Analytica.
Facebook recently re- vealed that Cambridge Ana- lytica, which is a data firm linked to President Don- ald Trump, used a quiz app to gather data on 50 million users. The information was then used for political tar- geting in advertising. Face- book said it only used information from users who gave their permission. How- ever, many of the users de- nied ever consenting to having their information col- lected.
Some Sentinel readers shared their opinions about
the incident and their plans about using Facebook in the
Internet regardless if they say its secure.
“Look at all the data breaches over the last year. Facebook is no differ- ent from any other social media site or site that stores data. If they didn’t sell it, someone would have hacked into it and sold it to the high- est bidder. Let’s pick up the phone and call each other in- stead of posting our lives on the Internet for others to read.”
Ms. Fredi Beck said, “I use Face-

Danny Green said, “I don’t plan on delet- ing my Facebook account. Just like any other website you have to be careful what you put on it. They can get your personal information
off any other website, too. Facebook is a good tool to keep in touch with family and friends, and can provide good information.”
Billy Wheeler said, “After gaining thou- sands of friends and fol- lowers, I did delete my original FB account. The risk of exposing personal in- formation was not an issue for me since I rarely shared details to make myself vul- nerable. It was more about time management and see- ing the futility of arguing is- sues over and over when no one is going to change their minds. I’ve started back now, but with a focus on
quality over quantity.”
