  Distinguished Black Educator Will Have School Named After Her

Thanks to the many voters and the Hillsborough County School Board (HCSB), revered teacher Dorothy Carter York will have a new PreK – 8 school named after her.
There were over 1,500 sub- missions to name the new school, but the HCSB voted unanimously to name the dis- trict’s new school Dorothy C. York PreK-8 Magnet School at the February 22, 2022, meet- ing.
The magnet school will open in the fall. It is in southeastern Hillsborough County, located in the Waterset community off Highway 301. This new school will engage students with an internationally minded focus

while also offering art, dance, and other opportunities to ex- plore their creative side.
Mrs. York was a teacher for 45 years. She was an Eng- lish instructor at Blake High School (English Department

Mrs. York’s daughter Liz York-Cohen was natu- rally overwhelmed by the com- munity’s support and the board’s vote.
“My mother left a huge footprint in the community and this honor is such a well-
deserved one,” stated York- Cohen.
Dorothy C. York PreK-8 Magnet School will provide re- lief to schools that are already at or near capacity. Because of the construction boom in South Hillsborough County, thousands of students are ex- pected to be entering county schools over the next 3-5 years.
