Bethune Takes Down
Homecoming day is a cel- ebration of the past.
The resurgent Florida A&M football team scored its’ first stout in 18 years Sat- urday at Bragg Memorial Stadium, defeating Norfolk (Va.) State, 17-0 during Homecoming festivities on the FAMU campus.
Saturday’s shutout was the first for Florida A&M (4- 2, 3-0 in MEAC), since a 43- 0 road whitewash of the Howard University Bison on September 30, 2000.
The victory was the third straight for the Rattlers, their longest win string since a four-game winning streak in 2011, while the three confer- ence wins represent FAMU’s best start (3-0) in league play since a similar opening stretch in 2009.
Saturday’s victory was also the fourth of the year for FAMU, which last posted four victories in a season in 2016 (4-7).

If that score allowed the 26,045 partisan fans a chance to breathe easier after watching the Rattlers cling to a slim lead, it was the clincher by the electric half- back Bishop Bonnett, who raced in from 14 yards out with 2:34 left to put the game out of reach at 17-0.
WHAT’S NEXT: The first MEAC Showcase Showdown of 2018 will take place, as first place FAMU (3-0) will travel to Greensboro, N.C., to face defending Black College National Champion and MEAC winner North Car- olina A&T (5-1, 2-0 MEAC) in a battle of the last confer- ence unbeaten teams, next Saturday at Aggie Stadium.
Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. Eastern Time, and the game will air live nationally on ESPN3.

The National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) Foundation has donated game day uniforms and ap- parel to the Southern Inter- collegiate Athletic Conference’s member schools, an expansion of the partnership between the his- torically black athletic confer- ence and NBA players.
The gift comes months after the NBPA hosted its sec- ond annual HBCU players combine for men’s basketball athletes from the SIAC and Southwestern Athletic Con- ference, the first exclusive training and scouting invita- tional event organized for Black college athletes among the four major American pro- fessional leagues.
“On behalf of the NBPA, we are honored to make this gift in support of the men’s and women’s basketball
membership. Making this gift acknowledges that history and strengthens our bond going forward.”
The conference has earned national headlines in recent years as a hub for at- tracting former NBA players to their first collegiate coach- ing jobs.
Morehouse College re- cently announced former NBA lottery pick Jarvis Hayes as an assistant coach for the Maroon Tigers, who followed former Clark Atlanta University head coach Dar- rell Walker and his succes- sor George Lynch.
Former NBA all-star Kenny Anderson was re- cently named the head bas- ketball coach at Fisk University, whose student- athletes also participated in the NBPA HBCU Top 50 Camp this past summer.

Bethune-Cookman turned the momentum of Saturday's Homecoming game on a dime with five cents change as the Wildcats downed Mississippi Valley State 41-27 before a crowd of 10,278 at Daytona Stadium.
Redshirt junior quarter- back Akevious Williams ac- counted for three touchdowns as the Wildcats (3-3) turned a 14-0 deficit into a 28-14 lead in an eight-minute span of the second quarter.
After Williams' 55-yard strike to Keavon Mitchell put the Wildcats on the score- board, BCU used two short- field possessions and Trevor Merritt's 49-yard pick-six to
take control of the contest. Marquis Hendrix's in- terception set up the next Wildcats score, a 19-yarder from Williams to Jimmie Robinson that made it 21-14 in favor of the Maroon and Gold with 6:21 left in the first
half.
Kennedy Ndukwe and
Donald Johnson, IV inter- ceptions helped the Wildcats put the Delta Devils away down the stretch.

From his quarterback posi- tion, Akevious Williams finished 11 of 24 for 123 yards in the air while rushing for 54 and a third quarter touch- down.
BCU has now won two games on the spin and 11 con- secutive Homecoming con- tests dating back to 2007.
The Wildcats travel to South Carolina State next Sat- urday in a pivotal Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) showdown at Oliver C. Daw- son Stadium in Orangeburg, South Carolina. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
