January Is National Mentoring Month:
Woman Says Mentoring Is ‘Vitally’ Important In Her Life
January is National Men- toring Month and the per- fect time to focus on those in our communities making an impact every day.
Tracey J. Brunson,
Ed.S., mentors at East Bay Senior High School and vol- unteers with the Hillsbor- ough County Anti-Drug Alliance.
The reason mentoring is important to her is because of her belief in “to whom much is given, much will be required.”
That is the fundamental guiding principle of her life. She feels strongly about her commitment to that to en- courage, uplift and teach the local youth.
Tracey said, “I feel abundantly blessed, having received the opportunity for an education, advanced de- grees, and a profession that is fulfilling and in which I can make a difference in the lives of our youth. As such, I have an obligation --and consider it a privilege --to pour back into the lives of young people.
“Research has shown that having connectivity and reliable, positive adults with whom they can relate has a significant impact on stu- dent success and achieve- ment and, for this reason, mentoring is vitally impor- tant to me. If I can be a pos- itive influence in the lives of the youth with whom I have a mentoring relationship, I benefit as much as they do from the relationship.”
She defines mentorship as a relationship that fosters the talents and abilities within the mentee that they did not see themselves.
