Hustlers; J-Lo's Stealing Strippers Saga Is An Enjoyable Thrill Ride
Queen Latifah Expects Nicki Minaj's Retirement To Be Temporary: ‘She'll Be Back’
After the dog days of Au- gust, littered with one lazily patchworked Hollywood product after another, there’s something wickedly indul- gent about the arrival of "Hustlers", a slick, flashy, se- ductively entertaining film from one season to the next.
This strippers saga is an enjoyable thrill ride starring Jennifer Lopez, Keke Palmer, Lilli Reinhart, and Constance Wu opens Friday in theaters. This fact- based crime drama received an 96% from movie critics. Lopez may be nominated for an Oscar for her perfomance in this one.
Based on an acclaimed long-read feature by Jessica Pressler, it tells a story that feels familiar and fresh. Fa- miliar because we’re accus- tomed to the fact-based crime movie formula, but fresh because we don’t usu- ally see it played out with women. It’s 2007 and Des- tiny (Constance Wu) has discovered that the life of a stripper isn’t quite as glam- orous or as lucrative as she thought. The competition is fierce, the clientele is either creepy (“What did daddy do to you?”) or racist (“Hey,
Lili Reinhart, Jennifer Lopez, Keke Palmer, and Constance Wu in Hustlers, a giddy, gaudy blast of a movie.
come here Lucy Liu!”) and by the time the men she works for have taken their cut, the money is barely ade- quate. It doesn’t help that she’s not quite sure what to do or just how to move her body to make more money, something she’s keenly aware of when she meets Ramona (Jennifer Lopez).
There are so many imme- diate pleasures and vicarious thrills to be had in Hustlers, a giddy, gaudy blast of a movie, that it’s easy to forget the intricate framework which houses it.
Lopez slinks through Hustlers with a deceptive
ease, as in control of the film as her character is of her sit- uation. It’s the sort of role that only a true movie star could pull off, so much of it reliant on a rare, intoxicating magnetism.
Awards attention would be deserved but a far greater result would be a more ex- pansive set of roles in her fu- ture.
When the women are hav- ing fun, so are we, and for the most part, there’s plenty of it to be had, whether it’s watch- ing a cameoing Cardi B teach Wu how to lap dance or Lopez trying to pay for a luxury car with dollar bills.
NORTH BERGEN, NJ – Queen Latifah doesn’t think Nicki Minaj’s rap re- tirement is set in stone. The veteran MC-turned-actress shared her thoughts on Nicki’s surprising an- nouncement while making her way to the reception hall for Treach and Cicely Evans’ wedding on Sunday (September 8).
“She must be in love and happy,” she told TMZ. “Let her live. She’s been grinding for a long time.”
But Latifah also noted, “Once you a rapper, you al- ways a rapper. She’ll be back.
QUEEN LATIFAH
Let her live first. Let her live her some life first.”
50 Cent Extends Olive Branch To Wendy Williams
50 Cent held his Tycoon pool party last month and al- legedly blacklisted Wendy Williams, one of his long- time adversaries. But the talk show queen found her way around security so her son could get a photo with Snoop Dogg for his birthday, much to 50’s chagrin.
According to a recent In- stagram post, it looks like the Power co-creator is ready to bury the hatchet.
On Monday (September 9), Fiddy shared a clip of Williams on the Bravo show What Happens Live with Andy Cohen. She’s asked to name three nice things about 50, which she was easily able to do.
“He’s not a bad looking man, I respect his hustle and I was one of the first people to ever play his music,” she tells Cohen. “As a matter of fact, [I] was probably the first on a cassette on the radio ... I got suspended for two weeks without pay because I used to be a renegade like that. If I liked it, I’d take it right off the block.”
50 CENT
It’s safe to presume 50 was surprised by her answers con- sidering that was an ideal op- portunity to throw some negativity back in his direc- tion. So, he lifted the alleged ban he had on Williams.
“what is this,” he wrote in the caption. “ok we gonna let you in TYCOON next time but you can’t just be coming to my party’s wit no invite.”
