Apartheid Campaigner
Winnie Mandela Has Died
As an educator, Mrs. Dorothy Jennings lived by the “Golden Rule,” “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” That is how she lived her life until the morning of Wednesday, March 26, 2018, when she died suddenly at her home.
Mrs. Jennings, a trans- plant from Claxton, GA, a “country girl” meets “city boy” and falls in love with Mr. Raymond L. Jennings, and begins their new life in Tampa, FL.
Arriving armed with her Bachelor of Science Degree from Fort Valley State Col- lege, with a specialty in Voca- tional Home Economics, she immediately was hired and began teaching at Hillsbor- ough Senior High School (HHS) as a Home Economics teacher. There, she impacted the lives of hundreds of stu- dents for a span of over 34 years.
Two life-changing experi- ences happened within a few years of each other.
Her beloved husband of almost 30 years passes.
Following, and during the final stretch of Hillsborough County’s Drop Program, she decided to retired and care for her ailing mother, whom she had moved to Tampa. The very next day, her mother passed. She was often asked, “Do you wish you had not re- tired, when you did?” Her reply would be, “If God wanted me to continue work- ing, He would’ve taken her sooner.”
She was a devoted mem- ber of Mt. Olive M. B. Church serving for decades in a cou- ple of ministries, and lastly the Usher Ministry, until her health became challenging.
All during Mrs. Jen- nings’ childhood, she en- joyed serving others, she acted in plays, sang in the choir, a member of the Glee Club and the Touring Club. However, her favorite club was Future Homemakers of America (FHA). That same
Winnie Madikizela Mandela, the former wife of South Africa’s first black pres- ident, Nelson Mandela has passed away.
The couple - famously pic- tured hand-in-hand as Mr. Mandela walked free from prison after 27 years - were a symbol of the anti-apartheid struggle for nearly three decades.
However, in later years her reputation became tainted legally and politically.
Family spokesman Victor Dlamini said in a statement: “She died after a long illness, for which she had been in and out of hospital since the start of the year.
Retired archbishop and Nobel laureate Desmond Tutu praised her as a “defin- ing symbol of the struggle against apartheid”, AFP re- ported.
“Her courageous defiance was deeply inspirational to

me, and to generations of ac- tivists,” he added.

MRS. DOROTHY CARR JENNINGS
love of doing for others fol- lowed her during her long- tenured and masterful teaching career at HHS. She also served as Advisor of FHA.
She loved her students and was loved by her many students, as evidence of the vast collection of photo al- bums stockpiled.
One former student, Don- ald L. Dowridge credits her from taking him from the life of “gangs’ to an author, moti- vation speaker, radio person- ality and entrepreneur, DLD Enterprises. For years after graduation, Mrs. Jennings followed his career, and he stayed in touch with her as well.
During her tenure at HHS, Mrs. Jennings was awarded the coveted title of Hillsbor- ough County’s “Teacher of the Year” award in 1996.
“There was nothing my aunt Dot (as she was called) wouldn’t do for her family and friends, and the feelings were mutual. She never missed family reunions on the Carr or Jennings side of her families. We had her in Tampa during the school year, but, when summer and Christmas breaks came around, she was Georgia bound,” as told by her niece, Mrs. Sherryl Jennings Cusseaux.
“She was my “Go to Aunt” when it came to our “Five Favs” (Family, Food, Fashion, Flowers and Fabulous Finds).”
Mrs. Jennings was the mother of one son, Mr. Za- vier (Lakieshia) Jen- nings, Sr. and grandmother of Zavier Jennings, Jr., and had many other family members.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, April 7, 2018, 11AM, at 34th Street Church of God, 3000 N. 34th Street, Tampa, FL. Services entrusted to Harmon Funeral Home.
