Plans Set For Original
N. B. Young Reunion; Registration Ends April 1st
From its opening in Janu- ary 1964, until June of 1971, Nathan B. Young Junior High was the beloved educational and social hub for hundreds of Belmont Heights and Jackson Heights teens.
The school was named in honor of Nathan B. Young, a Florida educator, who served as President to Florida A & M University from 1901-1923. He is truly remembered for stat- ing, "Young people, prepare yourselves, for the future is yours...if you are ready for it."
Affectionately known as the home of the Mighty Buf- faloes, N. B. Young Junior High’s galvanizing early years were brought to an end when, in June 1971, the school district was restructured, thus marking the end of segregated schools.
However, the legacy of its first student bodies and facul- ties stands strong. And now, 56 years later, we find that among Young’s “original herd” are community leaders, ministers, journalists, artists, business owners, politicians, educators of all levels, musicians, ath- letes, medical professionals, activists, attorneys, veterans, and countless others who have made and continue to make positive contributions to soci- ety.
While many of the alumni from those early years have maintained the friendships forged back in the day, others haven’t seen their old class- mates since leaving their dear school. Which is why the reu- nion was planned.
On Friday night, there will be an all-white attired, Meet and Greet, with card games, N. B. Young Trivia, food, cash bar and an old-school DJ.
This is the time to see old and meet new friends and pick
up your goodie bag (if you reg- ister for all events).
On Saturday, a day activity at Armature Works to connect and explore a changing ‘Tampa Bay’ has been planned, every- one who has a T-Shirt is asked to wear it with blue jeans.
Later on that evening, a ‘Grown Folks Prom’ will be held. Everyone is asked to dress in Cocktail/Prom attire with an added twist...Tennis Shoes. With the average age of the Reunion participants being 60-years-old, being comfort- able and dance-ready was the primary reason for the idea.
So, if you were a member of the faculty or staff or were a 7th, 8th or 9th grade student at Young Jr. High from 1964 through June of 1971, it is time to register to attend a weekend of events: October 9 - 10, 2020.
