Power Rangers (2017) - A group of high school teenagers ( Dacre Montgomery, Naomi Scott, RJ- Cyler, Ludi Lin, and Becky G. ) discover unique superpower while wondering in the mountain. They soon harness their abilities in order to save the world from an evil witch (former Ranger) named Rita (Elizabeth Banks). Must admit didn't expect this film to be good. Director Dean Israelite made this action film a sure hit. Enjoyed it ! Must-see for kids and adults. Made $40M U.S./ foreign- $18M- (budget -$100M)- four out of four and then some.
Life - A team of scientists (Jake Gyllenhaall, Rebecca Ferguson, Ryan Reynolds, Hiroyuki Sanada, and Aryon Bakare) are stationed on a Space Station discover a small flower life form from Mars that turns into a super intelligent flesh eating creature. If you like the Alien style films, then this sci-fi thriller will have you jumping. Definitely, not for kids. Made$12M (budget- $58M)- four out of four stars.
Beauty And The Beast (2017)- Disney and director Bill Condon revisit the Disney animated classic about a monstrous-looking prince (Dan Stevens) and a young woman (Emma Watson) who fall in love. Kids and adults will enjoy this film. Still No. 1 at box office -$319M -U.S./ $384M- foreign-(budget- $160M)- ****
Kong-Skull Island - A team of scientists (John Goodman, Corey Hawkins-played Dr.Dre/ 24 Legacy) and a military team ( Samuel Jackson, Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, Jason Mitchell-played Eazy E) explore an uncharted island where King Kong lives. The team must soon fight Kong and other creatures to get off the island. Enjoyed this outrageous Kong story which featured a good number of Black actors. How many will get off the island? Made -$133M U.S./ foreign- $258M (budget $185M )- ****
Logan (2017) - A weary Wolverine-Logan (Hugh Jackman) cares for an ailing Professor X (Patrick Stewart) and Caliban in a hideaway building on the Mexican Border. Logan’s peaceful world comes to an end when a young mutant-Laura (Dafne Keen) shows up while she is being pursed by a deadly corporation with killer assassins. This has to be the most violent Marvel film ever (R). The young mutant-Laura is off-the chain dangerous. Cyborg Donald Pierce (Boyd Holbrook) plays a very good villian. Made - $201M- U.S./ foreign- $363M- (budget- $97M)- ****
Get Out - Jordan Peele's horror/thriller is about a Black man -Chris) (Daniel Kaluuya) visiting his white girlfriend's- Rose (Allison Williams) family mysterious estate in upstate New York. Once arriving to the estate, Chris has to deal with the racial questions from Rose's family and friends. He is deeply dis- turbed by the Black servants on the estate as he soon realizes the family has a sinister secret that turns this film into a horror flick. Director Peele's of the comedy team of Key and Peele screenplay is twilight zone flawless as he received 100% from the movie critics. Must-see for horror fans. Made - $147M (bud- get- $4M)- ****
John Wick 2 - After getting a visit from a mafia boss to repay a debt from the past, John Wick (Keanu Reeves) discovers that the bounty was now on him. If you want to see Wick get busy in this well-written action thriller, then don’t miss it! Reeves comes through again. Made $90M- (budget-N/A)- ****
Split - M. Night Shyamalan (Signs) directs a pyscho-thriller about three girls (Ana-Taylor Joy) being kidnapped by a mentally disturbed man with 24 distinct personalities. McAvoy should have been nomi- nated for an Oscar for best male actor. Psychiatrist Dr. Karen Fletcher (Betty Buckley) shoud have been nominated for best supporting actress. A well-written script from Shyamalan. Must see for fans looking for a pyscho thriller. Made-$137M (budget-$9M)- ****
XXX: Return of Xander Cage - Daredevil Operative Xander Cage( Vin Diesel) returns from the dead to recruit a new group of thrill-seeking XXX members to find a Pandora’s box that controls the satellites in the world. The government (Toni Collette) sends Cage’s team in on a mission to get the box from a highly skilled team (Donnie “IP Man” Yen, Deepika Padukone). A predictable storyline full of stunts and violence. Being a Vin Diesel fan, I still enjoyed it, even though the script was weak. Made $44M U.S./ foreign- $301M- (budget- $85M)- ***
Hidden Figures - Based on a true story, three Black women (Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, Janelle Monae) provide NASA with ground breaking mathematical data needed to launch and land the program’s first space mission. An amazing true story about the trials, tribulation, and triumph these women had to go through to be successful. A feel-good film. Must- see for everyone! Made -$167M (bud- get- $25M)- *****classic
Fences - A disgruntle father (Denzel Washington) back in the 50s, struggles to raise his family (Viola Davis, Stephen Henderson) and come to terms with his unfortunate past. You really have to be in the mood for this blockbuster Broadway play brought to the big screen by director/actor Denzel Washington. If you like serious drama, then this film is for you. Made $57M (budget-$24M)- ****
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story - The Rebel Alliance (Felicity Jones, Diego Luna) comes together to steal the plans for the Death Star weapon from the evil Orson Krennic (Ben Mendelsohn). The Alliance goes Rogue One to set up the epic ending with Krennic and Darth Vader (voice by James Earl Jones) that made this Star Wars film a Classic. Also starring Forrest Whitaker, Donnie Yen (IP Man) and Mads Mikkelsen. Director Gareth Edwards scored on this one. Must-see for Star Wars fans. Made-$529M-U.S/ foreign- $523M- (budget-$200M)- *****classic.
Arrival - A speech interpreter (Amy Adams) and a mathematician (Jeremy Renner) are recruited by the military (Forest Whitaker) in translating alien communication. Pressed by time, the group must figure out what the aliens are doing on Earth before a World War. A nice twist at the end. Must-see for sci-fi fans. Made $98M (budget-47M)- ****
Moana - Another Disney Animation classic about a Chief’s teenage daughter Moana (voiced by Auli’i Cravalho) going on an dangerous journey on the ocean to seek out the demigod Maui (voiced by Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson) to help save her island from a terrible curse.
