Evening Of Jazz To Benefit Historic Community School
BY IRIS B. HOLTON Sentinel City Editor
On Sunday, April 14th, members of the community will gather for the annual, “Jazz’n At The Italian Club,” 1731 E. 7th Avenue.
This year, those in attendance can enjoy a reception from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The event will begin at 5 p.m. and conclude at 8 p.m.
Businessman Marvin Knight is the coordinator and inspiration behind helping the oldest African American Catholic School in Hills- borough County. He has recruited a group of citizens who shares his de- sire to help make the event success- ful.
“We want everyone to come out and enjoy the music, relax, while helping us to help children of the community. What better way can you have a good time and give back at the same time?
“We are asking everyone who have shared this experience in the past to come out and we are asking those who have not attended to come out,” Knight said.
This year, Hott Mess is return- ing, along with City Groove, and

Occurrence have already signed on as part of the entertainment for the evening of jazz and relaxation.
Ms. Vivian Heyward has been a part of the fundraiser since the be- ginning. She said, “We need every- one’s support to make this event both an enjoyable experience and to help the children who are the adults of tomorrow.
“We feel that every child must have a strong foundation in order to

become a leader of tomorrow. That foundation begins with a great edu- cation.”
“I feel very honored to work on a Planning Committee with so many talented professionals who have come together to give back to the youth in the Tampa Bay Commu- nity.”
Knight further said the goal of the organization is to raise $25,000 this year. All proceeds from the event will benefit the students at St.
Peter Claver.
St. Peter Claver
Catholic School
In 1893, the St. Peter Claver Catholic Church came into existence with the purchase of an old existing church. On February 2, 1894, two Sisters of the Holy Names began classes with 16 students.
After arsonists burned the build- ing on Morgan Street, the church purchased a piece of property on the corner of Scott and Governor in the Black community. The school re- opened in October 1894.
The school was so successful that seven years later, its students were able to pass the Teacher’s Examina- tion and receive certificates from the Board of Public Instruction. This year, St. Peter Claver Catholic School is celebrating its 125th Anniversary.
Today, the school continues its mission of educating children in the community. It accepts students from Kindergarten through 5th grades.

The Florida Lottery ® Takes Education Further
 Helping Schools And Students Win
Since the Florida Lot- tery’s establishment in 1988, we have given players the op- portunity to transform their lives, and we have been steadfast in pursuit of im- proving education statewide, year after year.
Over the past 30 years, the Florida Lottery has re- mained committed to en- hancing public education in Florida. Throughout that time, we have contributed more than $34 billion to pub- lic schools, universities and colleges, and directly to stu- dents through the Bright Fu- tures Scholarship Program.
The Bright Futures Schol- arship Program, which is pri- marily funded by the Florida Lottery, was created in 1997
by the Florida Legislature to assist students in pursuing postsecondary educational career goals. Since the pro- gram’s inception, we have contributed more than $5 billion to send over 800,000 students to college.
The Florida Lottery is proud to be a dedicated and dependable funding source for public education, con- tributing more than $1 bil- lion annually for the past 16 consecutive years, while re- maining one of the most effi- cient lotteries in the country.
We thank you for helping us reach these incredible milestones, as a portion of every ticket purchased goes towards education. We hope that the benefits of our con- tributions continue to be felt in communities across the entire state.
