Florida in 2016, and nearly 1.7 million new cases nation- wide. There will be 43,600 deaths from cancer in Florida this year, with lung cancer re- sponsible for the largest number of deaths, the Cancer Society said.
Bay Pines' growing cancer program annually treats about 4,000 veterans, a press
release said. The program provides surgery, radiation oncology, chemotherapy, cancer support groups, can- cer survivorship clinics and cancer care navigation.
Services currently are spread throughout the cam- pus, and the new center will bring them all under one roof, in a new freestanding building adjacent to the ex- isting radiation oncology center and connected via a walkway. There will be 24 treatment rooms, a 50 per- cent increase from the 16 treatment rooms currently available. The building will also have a standalone phar- macy for patients undergoing chemotherapy treatment.
The Bay Pines cancer pro- gram is currently the only VA-operated cancer program in Florida with an active ac- creditation from American College of Surgeons Commis- sion on Cancer.
