BY IRIS B. HOLTON Sentinel City Editor
Earlier this year, a group of individuals formed the “Friends of the C. Blythe An- drews Library.” As the com- pletion of the new library draws near, the organization wants to raise money to cover the things that tax dollars al- located to the project will not.
As a fundraiser, the or- ganization is offering the pur- chase of a Commemorative Brick. Any member of the community who purchases a brick will become a charter member of “Friends of the C. Blythe Andrews, Jr., Li- brary.”
Ms. Cherylene Levy,
president of “Friends of the C. Blythe Andrews, Jr. Li- brary” said the deadline to re- ceive applications is Sunday, July 15, 2018.The funds raised will be utilized for the purchase of everything from A to Z.
“We will purchase furni- ture, pictures and other items such as arts & crafts and zip- per zapper sewing,” she said.
The C. Blythe Andrews, Jr., Public Library, located at 2607 E. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Blvd., closed and was demolished in May 2017. Now, the new building is under construction and slated for completion in the fall of 2018.
The new building will fea- ture larger meeting spaces, a recording studio, a computer lab, and a separate area for children with computers and learning stations. It will also feature an African American media archive and a Friends of the Library Bookstore, among other things.

Known as the College Hill Public Library, it opened July 13, 1989, to meet the needs of the East Tampa community.
The library was renamed in honor of C. Blythe An- drews, Jr., after his death
in January 2010.
A native of Jacksonville,
Florida, Mr. Andrews moved to Tampa with his family as a child. He attended the public schools of Hills- borough County. At 16, Mr. Andrews graduated from Middleton High School, in 1946.
He continued his educa- tion at Talladega College, in Talladega, Alabama, where he obtained his B. A. Degree in Economics. In 1951, he graduated from Boston Uni- versity, School of Journalism, where he earned his Master’s Degree in Journalism.
After serving a tour of duty in the U. S. Army, Mr. Andrews returned to Tampa and launched a life- long career in journalism. Under the guidance of his fa- ther, the late C. Blythe An- drews, Mr. Andrews learned the newspaper trade at the Florida Sentinel Bulletin newspaper.
He remained an integral part of the newspaper until his death.
In addition to the newspa- per, Mr. Andrews was a re- spected businessman and a member of several boards and committees, including gubernatorial appointments.
Mr. Andrews was a member of Gamma Zeta Lambda Chapter, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., and life member of the Hillsbor- ough County Branch NAACP.
