Widow Of Fireman To Honor Him With Scholarships
BY IRIS B. HOLTON Sentinel City Editor
On Saturday, June 16th, a Memorial Service will be held for the late Alan Dale Anderson, a Tampa fire- man who passed away re- cently. And although she is in mourning, his widow is thinking about doing some- thing that will help others.
Mrs. Claire Anderson
said, “In lieu of flowers, I would like to start a scholar- ship fund in my husband’s name. He loved being a fire- man and he loved helping others. Becoming a fireman is expensive and I would like to help at least 5 people,” she said.
She further said a portion of the proceeds will provide scholarships to young, dedi- cated and deserving mem- bers of our community seeking a career in fire serv- ice.
Anderson quietly lost his battle with cancer on May 19, 2018, surrounded by family and friends. He was 54-years-old.
A native of Madison County, FL and the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Early (Laura) Anderson, Alan graduated from Madison High School. He continued his education at Waldorf Col- lege, where he earned his de- gree in Fire Science.
CLAIRE ANDERSON AND ALAN ANDERSON
In 1985, he joined the Hillsborough County Fire Department. He retired in 2016, after becoming ill. He served for 32 years and re- tired as a Battalion Chief. His brother, Steve Anderson was a Captain with the Tampa Fire Department at the time.
Mrs. Anderson said her husband had initially gone on a medical leave, but re- tired and moved to Atlanta to be close to the center he was getting treatment for prostate cancer. He recov- ered from that battle. How- ever, when he went to the doctor a year later, the pan- creatic cancer was discov-
ered.
The couple married on
7/7/2007, Mrs. Anderson said her husband decided on that day. He was the father of a blended family of six.
Mrs. Anderson said her husband worked with the Firemen’s Explorer organi- zation and he even encour- aged his stepdaughter, Ms. Juanita Benjamin to be- come a member of the Hills- borough County Fire Department. She has been employed for a year.
