Early Childhood Literacy Fair to Spark Interest in Reading
Books have the power to develop a child’s love for learn- ing, provide inspiration and open students up to a range of new ideas.
On Saturday, February 1, from 10 a.m. - 12:30 p.m., Hillsborough County Public Schools will put that power in the hands of our youngest learners as we host an Early Childhood Literacy Fair.
Literacy is a top priority for Hillsborough Schools. Dr. Stacy Hahn, School Board
Member for District 2, has made literacy her primary issue and spearheaded the Lit- eracy Fair. She knows it is dif- ficult for a child to become a great reader if they do not have access to amazing, age-appro- priate books.
All young readers and their families are invited to join this Saturday at the SouthShore Regional Library, located at 15816 Beth Shields Way in Ruskin.
Students can join in on Sto- rytime and enjoy crafts and games during the fair. Families can also participate in free vi- sion and dental screenings. Most importantly, students
will leave the Literacy Fair with free books!
Studies have shown that children who are not able to read on grade level by 3rd grade are four times less likely to graduate by age 19 than a child who does read profi- ciently in the earlier years.
Students are also more likely to struggle in other sub- ject areas, like science and math.
This Literacy Fair is made possible thanks to community partners including myON on- line, Caspers Company, Pepin Family Foundation, Feeding America and the Hillsborough Education Foundation.
