Hymn of theWeek
By Carlton Burgess
‘Give Me A Clean Heart’
DR. MARGARET DOUROUX
Chances are if you walk into any African-American church on Easter Sunday, you would not only encounter con- gregants dressed in beautiful dresses and suits, but you would hear the choir raise the chorus of Dr. Margaret Douroux's He Decided To Die (He Would Not Come Down From The Cross). As the pitch goes higher on this gospel hymn, so does the fer- vor and the level of the spirit. Yet this widely known musical staple from Douroux's pen is not the subject of today, but it's her take on Psalm 51:10 that we celebrate.
Give me a clean heart So that I may serve thee Lord fix my heart so that I may be used by thee For I'm not worthy of all these blessings
Give me a clean heart And I'll follow thee.
The daughter of a pastor, Margaret grew up and was educated in Los Angeles, Cali- fornia. She published Give Me A Clean Heart in 1970. Her contribution to church music has been immeasurable. Her work with her ground breaking organization, The Heritage Music Foundation, works to build a concert hall for gospel music just as ‘The Grand Ole Opry’ salutes coun- try music.
Dr. Douroux recently re- tired after serving churches for 64 years, but continues to travel conducting music work- shops and seminars. She was the first keynote speaker for the Hymn Lovers Conference held in Washington, DC, 2012.
Join Carlton Burgess and other hymn enthusiasts for the 5th Hymn Lovers Con- ference at the DoubleTree Suites by Hilton Tampa Bay on April 20th-22nd.
