Mom Accused Of Killing Daughter Ruled Competent
A 16-year-old was ar- rested Tuesday evening. He was charged with the murder of a 14-year-old girl hit by gunfire while riding in a car.
According to the Hillsbor- ough County Sheriff’s Office, Dereck Polanco Rivera was arrested at his home. He has been charged with sec- ond-degree murder and throwing a deadly missile at, within, or into a vehicle.
During the early morning hours of June 20th, a 14-year- old was riding in the back of a vehicle. An adult was driving and tw0 other teenagers were in the car.
Police said when the car reached the intersection of Kingsway Road and East Clay Avenue, someone opened fire and shot at the vehicle several times.
The adult female driver went to the Walgreens, 128 E. Brandon Blvd., and called 9- 1-1. When deputies arrived, they discovered a bullet had struck the 14-year-old in the back of the head.
She was transported to Brandon Hospital, and later airlifted to Tampa General

Hospital, where she was listed in “very critical condi- tion.” Identified on social media through a gofundme page, the teenager, identified as Dinorah Rodriguez, died the following day.
During the investigation, detectives learned that the occupants in the car had at- tended a house party in Val- rico.
Police said a male occu- pant in the car had a “long standing beef” with Dereck Rivera. Rivera is alleged to have targeted the vehicle after it left the party and fired

several shots at it.
It has not been deter-
mined what the beef was about. However, Rodriguez was not the intended target, police said.
According to police, Rivera is a certified member with the “TC Boys,” a gang operating in the Town N’ Country area. The shooting is not believed to be gang-re- lated.
The Hillsborough County State Attorney’s Office will re- view the case and determine if Rivera will be charged as an adult.
