CARLA HARRIS
BY KENYA WOODARD Sentinel Feature Writer
The keys to a successful career lie in the relationships you build and having some- one who advocates on your behalf to others.
And being your true self is critical.
Jacksonville native Carla Harris, vice chairman of banking giant Morgan Stan- ley, dropped those “Pearls of Wisdom” as the keynote speaker at the Women’s Conference of Florida.
Harris, a vice chairman at financial services giant Morgan Stanley, held an au- dience of hundreds captive with her lively and down-to- earth delivery of advice ap- plicable to both life and career.
Everyone has two types of currency: performance and relationship. Performance currency is generated by your delivery of tasks that are assigned to you. It’s worth about $1.
Relationship currency is worth much more. It’s gener- ated by the investments you make in the people in your environment.
In short, getting to know your colleagues and co- workers can pay off hugely, Harris said.
“You must have relation- ship with the seat that touches your seat,” she said. “It’s your job to make sure that as many people as pos- sible are aware of your out- side performance.”
Performance currency, however, shouldn’t be un- derestimated. It gets you no-
ticed and can help attract a sponsor, a powerful person who can help you ascend in your organization or com- pany, Harris said.
“It is indeed the rela- tionship you must focus on,” she said. “The sponsor must have a seat at the decision- making table and have the juice. They are spending
their currency on you.” Authenticity also is nec- essary to win at work, said Harris, a graduate of Har- vard University who holds an M. B. A. from Harvard
Business School.
Harris, an accomplished
gospel singer, shared the story of how singing Burger King’s jingle so impressed the company’s chief execu- tive officer that he added her to his team of trusted advi- sors with whom he confers on major deals.
“The last thing you should ever do is submerge that which is uniquely you,” she said. “Nobody can be you the way you are.”
Harris cautioned against being paralyzed by fear. Instead, use it to fuel your drive for achievement, she said.
“Fear should have no place in your success equa- tion,” she said. “Failure al- ways brings you a gift and that gift is called experi- ence.”
When faced with the de- cision to remain comfortable or take a risk, the latter is al- ways worth it, Harris said.
“If you want to maximize your success, you must both expect and strategize to win,” she said.
