Endorsement Of District 5 Candidate
BY LEON B. CREWS Sentinel Staff Writer
This year’s race for a seat on the Hillsborough County School Board has drawn a lot of candidates, especially in Dis- tricts 5 and 7.
In District 5, five candidates have filed, and in District 7, 8 candidates have filed.
Jean Clements, President of the Hillsborough Classroom Teachers Association (HCTA) Board, said they have endorsed William Person in District 1; Cindy Stuart in District 3, and Alan Clendenin in Dis- trict 7.
Ms. Clements said they have not endorsed a candidate for the District 5 seat, currently held by Ms. Doretha Edge- comb.
“The Teacher’s Association and Labor Union decided not to endorse a candidate for Dis- trict 5 at this time.
“We’ve always supported Ms. Edgecomb, and when she decided not to run a couple of days before our interviews, we realized we didn’t know the other candidates well enough to endorse them. Our plan was to endorse Ms. Edgecomb.”
Ms. Clements said they could still endorse a candidate during the primary when they screen the remaining candi- dates in a runoff.
Ms. Clements also said they made that decision be- cause there were so many can- didates for the District 5 seat. However, they had no problem in endorsing the District 7 can- didate, and that seat has three more candidates than the Dis- trict 5 seat.
“We will endorse a candidate for District 5, but it looks like that’s not going to happen until the primary, unless the Union and the HCTA changes its mind.”
