Juneteenth is the oldest national celebration com- memorating the end of slav- ery in the United States.
Rev. Willie G. Dixon,
Executive Director of C. O. A. C. H. Foundation and June- teenth Event Coordinator, says, “There are many forms of slavery, some of which in- clude mental, physical and fi- nancial slavery. The Willie Lynch theory is still working on behalf of a system that is used to keep 99% of Black and Brown people in bondage. This strategically planned system is however, no respecter of race, but rather classism.”

With the Florida Depart- ment Of Transportation (FDOT) pushing hard for their proposed Tampa Bay Express project, several com- munity groups have stepped up in opposition of the proj- ect.
The proposed project would add toll lanes to I-275 and I-4, and eliminate a lot of homes and businesses on the east and west sides of I-275.
Tampa Heights and Semi- nole Heights residents have led the charge in opposition to the project, and a group called Sunshine Citizens has taken the lead in providing

outreach to residents in the impacted area.
Joining the residents and support groups is Metropoli- tan Planning Organization (MPO) Board Chair, Com- missioner Les Miller.
Commissioner Miller
said a year ago, he made a motion for FDOT to work with the impacted communi- ties and that the people would be treated fairly.
“They didn’t do any of that. I also pointed out to them that the study they were using is 20 years old.
“The last presentation they made was not professional, because they still didn’t ad- dress the concerns of the citi- zens.”
Commissioner Miller
said he doesn’t know how the other 15 members of the MPO will vote, but he’s made his stand.
“The MPO has the author- ity to knock it down, but FDOT can come back later with a revised plan, and started the process all over again.”
A public hearing is sched- uled for June 22nd, after which FDOT is expected to make a decision on whether they plan to move ahead with their plans, or suspend them until the concerns of the citi- zens are met.
